An exciting new northern travel business that holds great promise
for both the visitors and the visited in the North is scheduled
to start next July. A cruise ship based out of Nunavik will begin
its guided tours, bringing passengers on each trip to experience
the uniqueness of the culture, the people and the environment of
Nunavik and beyond.
Makivik recently created Cruise North
Expeditions, a new subsidiary that will bring
tourists from other nations to our region.
Cruise North Expeditions has designed its
tours to attract people who are truly interested
in a northern experience, and who
will be given lots of opportunity during their
travels to explore the region and understand
more about who we are and what our
region is all about.
Each trip is scheduled for one week,
with passengers arriving on First Air to
Kuujjuaq to board the ship Ushuaia. The
ship carries a maximum of 66 passengers
with 31 crewmembers. It runs cruises to
the Antarctic between November and March
each year. This year, once the Antarctic
summer comes to an end, it will proceed
to Kuujjuaq on time for its maiden Nunavik
voyage that begins July 10th. Here, the
first cruise will begin and will be called The
Arctic Explorer. In this voyage the route
will begin from Kuujjuaq to Kangirsuk,
by Kangiqsujuaq, Ivujivik and Tudjaat, to
Kinngait, Kimmirut, Akpatok Island, and
finally back to Kuujjuaq. The tour will also
bring the travellers to the surrounding areas
and provide them with lots of opportunity to
experience their surroundings: hiking, taking
excursions on the land, visiting archeological
sites, bird-watching, and listening to
throat-singing, legends, and experiencing
our Inuit culture for the first time.
Kuujjuaq is the ideal homeport for this
company because of its daily jet service that
will allow the ship time and air time to be cut in half. This will allow
for lower prices while making the tours highly accessible.
