Cruise North is promising to add not only excitement for those
wishing to cruise in Nunavik, but it is also expected to create
local economic spin-offs.
Adamie Alaku also adds, "Of course it will be our pleasure to
welcome visitors as we have much to share with them. Over time
and with the dedication of our communities, we will become more
and more established for onshore hospitality as well as at sea. In
the long run, we want the financial benefits to the Inuit to be significant
from this venture. The tourist industry is steadily growing
in the North, and what better way to see our coastal communities
than by sea?"
From the Far South to the Far North
The ship is named after the town in southern Argentina
that serves as the main port for expedition cruise ships visiting
Antarctica. "Ushuaia” means, “westward pointing bay” in the language
of the Yamana people who lived in the area before the arrival
of European settlers. They lived among the islands south of the
mainland, away from the larger and more numerous Ona Indians,
and took their livelihood from the sea. They actually lived in their
dugout canoes, inside of which they maintained small fires for
cooking and warmth. In 1520, when Ferdinand Magellan became
the first European explorer to discover a sea route between the
Atlantic and Pacific oceans, he saw the smoke from these fires
and named the island group “Tierra del Fuego” — “land of fire”.

For close to 60 years, Makivik’s First Air has been bringing visitors
to Canada’s North. Now acknowledged as Canada’s largest
northern air carrier, our airline has grown to become an important
and successful business enterprise for Nunavik Inuit. Each year
First Air jet services to Kuujjuaq bring cargo and supplies for our
communities and allow us to export our goods and culture.
Business and government personnel rely on First Air’s connections
beyond our region. Annually
tourists, game hunters and sport
fishers numbering in the thousands,
come to Nunavik from around the
world via First Air. And now the role
of our airline has expanded again
to be an essential partner in the
economic success of Makivik’s
Cruise North Expeditions tourism
initiative.
Beginning this July, and running
throughout the summer of 2005,
Cruise North Expeditions will run
weekly Arctic tours by ship. Every seven days these cruises will
depart from Kuujjuaq. It will be our airline, First Air, that brings
them here.
