Before leaving the igloo to go onto the evening festivities,
the men gathered together in a circle to pray in honour of their
forefathers and to bless the work they had duly accomplished. As
Jacusie Ittukallak explained, many of them were born in igloos on
the island before the community was
founded in 1952. "Our parents spent
many winters living on this island in
an igloo village," he recalled.
At 11 o'clock the next morning, an
official opening ceremony took place.
Local elder Maatiusi Amarualik did the
honours of cutting the ribbon to officially
open the igloo to the eager people
gathered outside. Then 402 people
were let in one-by-one and were counted
as they entered. Once inside, they
celebrated the achievement with traditional
drum dancing, throat singing,
and ayaya songs.
It was estimated that space
remained for at
least 200 more people.
Nevertheless,
402 were more than

world record. A judge, a lawyer, a police officer,
and Nunavik's new federal MP, Yvon Lévesque,
were present to make the count official. Forms
were to be sent to the Guinness Book of World
Records in hope of one day seeing the achievement
published in there.
Given the sheer volume of claims sent each
year to the global authority on record-breaking,
which just celebrated its 50th anniversary this
year, it is expected that it will take a couple of
months before Puvirnituq receives a certificate of
recognition. The closest thing ever to be entered
in the notorious book was a Swedish ice hotel, so
the men who thought this project through are confident
that their igloo will make the record.
