A. Regular and irregular past tense verbs<br />

Follow the rules in chapter 14, section III and write these verbs in the<br />

past tense: start, peel, heat, chop, whip, scoop, pour, cover, top. Use<br />

the list of irregular verbs in the appendix in the back of the book to write<br />

these verbs in the past tense: have, take, cut, put, set<br />

B. Using a comma after a subordinate clause<br />

A clause that begins with a subordinate conjunction (such as before,<br />

after, when, while, until) is called a subordinate clause. If the subordinate<br />

clause comes first in a sentence, you must separate it from the<br />

main clause with a comma. Study these examples:<br />

Before you eat a banana, peel the skin off.<br />

subordinate clause (comma) main clause<br />

Peel the skin off before you eat a banana.<br />

main clause (no comma) subordinate clause<br />

Copy the sentences, and make all the corrections that are necessary.<br />

Use commas, and use capital letters when they are needed.<br />

1. before you begin have everything ready<br />

2. peel the banana before you cut it<br />

3. after you cut the banana put it in a dish<br />

4. heat the chocolate sauce until it boils<br />

5. while it s heating take out the ice cream<br />

6. when you scoop out the ice cream make little round balls<br />

7. put the ice cream on the banana before you pour the sauce<br />

8. when the chocolate sauce is hot pour it over the ice cream<br />

9. whip some cream until it is stiff<br />

10. chop some nuts while your friend is whipping the cream<br />

11. when the cream is stiff put it on the ice cream<br />

12. after you put on the cream add nuts and a cherry<br />
