III. Grammar Subject­verb agreement<br />

Each sentence below has a singular subject and an article (a or an)<br />

before it. Change the subject to a plural form. Change the verb. You will<br />

not need an article before the plural noun.<br />

1. A pelican is a bird with a big beak.<br />

Pelicans are birds with big beaks.<br />

2. A pelican has strange food habits.<br />

3. A pelican picks up fish in its beak.<br />

4. A pelican takes more food than it eats at one time.<br />

5. A person is different from a pelican.<br />

6. A person has food habits, too.<br />

7. A cabbage is a vegetable.<br />

8. A vegetarian does not eat meat.<br />

9. A habit is an activity that we do all the time.<br />

10. A saying is a group of words with special meaning.<br />

IV. Sentence Construction Noncount nouns<br />

Some nouns are not countable. They are not singular, and they are<br />

not plural, either. They are never used with the singular article a or an,<br />

and they don’t usually take a plural ­s ending. Noncount nouns take a<br />

singular verb. Study these examples:<br />

meat<br />

Vegetarians don’t eat meat. (no article)<br />

One man’s meat is another man’s poison. (singular verb)<br />

Make sentences with the groups of words below. The noncount<br />

noun in each group is underlined.<br />

1. Peter / cook / meat / for hamburgers<br />

Peter cooks meat for hamburgers.<br />

2. People / eat / food<br />

3. Beef / come from / cows<br />

4. Pork / come from / pigs<br />

5. Coffee / come from / South America<br />

6. Tea / come from / China<br />
