MAN, AND THE NEGRO.<br />

*'And God saw that the wickedness of man was<br />

great in the earth, and every imagination of the thoughts<br />

of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented<br />

the lyord that he had made inan on the earth, and it grieved<br />

him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man<br />

whom I have created from the face of the earth; both<br />

man and beast, and the creeping things, and the fowls of<br />

the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.''<br />

(Gen. vi, 5-6-7.)<br />

But just at this critical juncture, the most critical<br />

that man has ever known, when the hand of Almighty<br />

God was raised in his just wrath to destroy from the<br />

earth which their shameless crime had corrupted the last<br />

vestige of the seed of man, ''Noah found grace in the<br />

eyes of the Lord.'' (Gen. vi, 8.) Why? "Noah was<br />

a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah<br />

walked with God." (Gen. vi, 9.)<br />

It will be observed that there are<br />

three characteristics<br />

here recorded of Noah, which are assigned as so<br />

many reasons why "Noah found grace in the eyes of the<br />

Lord:" (l) "Noah was a just man;'' (2) he was<br />

''perfect in his generations;" (3) "Noah walked with<br />

God." <strong>The</strong> first and third characteristics are happily<br />

not uncommon, for in<br />

sacred history various individuals<br />

are accredited with similar characteristics. <strong>The</strong> second<br />

characteristic is common to every pure-blooded descendant<br />

of Adam. But the record of it, unlike the choracistic<br />

itself, is peculiar to Noah. It is not significant that<br />

in all sacred history there is just this one individual of
