God said to Moses,<br />

*'Go unto Pharaoh, and tell him,<br />

Behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thy cattle,<br />

which is in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses,<br />

upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep;<br />

there shall be a very grievous murrian. And the Lord<br />

shall sever between the cattle of Israel and the cattle<br />

of Kg"ypt; and there shall nothing* die of all that is the<br />

children's of Israel.<br />

And the Lord did that thing on<br />

the morrow, and all the cattle of Egypt died; but of<br />

the cattle of the children of Israel died not one. And<br />

the heart of Pharoah was hardened, and he did not<br />

let the people go. And the Lord said unto Aaron,<br />

Take to you handfuls of ashes of the furnace, and let<br />

Moses sprinkle<br />

it toward the heaven in the sight of<br />

Pharoah. And it shall become small dust in all the<br />

land of Kgypt, and shall be a boil breaking forth with<br />

all the<br />

blains upon man and upon beast, throughout<br />

land of Egypt. And they took the ashes of the furnace,<br />

and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses sprinkled<br />

it toward heaven; and it became a boil breaking forth<br />

with blains upon man and upon beast." (Ex. ix, i, 3,<br />

4, etc.)<br />

We are thus taught (1) that the '^cattle" are<br />

qiiadrupeds, horses, camels, etc. And that the<br />

**beasts" were a very different class of animals, as<br />

shown by the fact that the "cattle" were first afflicted;<br />

then afterwards the "beasts" were afflicted. This is<br />

signigcant, when we consider that each succeeding<br />

plague was more injurious to the Egyptians than its
