38 MAN, AND THE NEGRO,<br />

Man alone was created "in the image of God;''<br />

the fish and fowl and beast, like the plants, were<br />

made after their kinds. Man alone is responsible to<br />

God for his acts; the lower animals are responsible to<br />

man, under whose "dominion" they were placed in the<br />

creation, and into whose "hands" God delivered them<br />

after their preservation from the deluge. Man alone<br />

in his * 'first estate" was clothed with Divine authority<br />

to **have dominion" and he alone fell from this high<br />

"estate" by his wanton violation of Divine ,law.<br />

Hence, man alone is the subject of redemption.<br />

Man was created "in the image of God" — male<br />

and female— a single pair<br />

— distinct from the<br />

fish and<br />

fowl and beast, which, like the plants, were made<br />

after their kind. This is the teaching of the scriptural<br />

narrative of Divine creation.<br />

Man is a highly developed species of ape — the<br />

human species— and this human species is divisible<br />

into five races of men— the <strong>Negro</strong>, the Malay, the <strong>In</strong>dian,<br />

the Mongolian, and the Caucasian. This is the<br />

teaching of the atheistic theory of Natural Development,<br />

which thrusts God aside and declares that man,<br />

the most complex organism,<br />

is merely a development<br />

from the most simple. Hence, according to this theory,<br />

man traces his pedigree back through<br />

the beast<br />

and fowl and fish to the lowest form of animal.<br />

<strong>The</strong> absolute conflict between the teachings of<br />

these opposing schools — Divine Creation<br />
