the introduction of different blood, either white or<br />

black, or that of a mixed-blood in which the white and<br />

the black blood exists in different proportions — alone<br />

can chang-e the complexion of a tribe or nation.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ancients owned neg"roes and with their labor developed<br />

the splendid civilizations, the remains of<br />

which, though often in ruins, are found on every continent<br />

of the earth. Having g-rown rich and powerful,<br />

they forg-ot God, descended to amalgamation and<br />

were destroyed by Divine edict, and their civilizations<br />

laid in ruins, as in the case of the Babylonians,<br />

Assyrians, Ethiopians, etc., or they were absorbed by<br />

amalgamation and their civilizations descended to<br />

their mixed-blooded progeny, as in the case of the<br />

Mexicans, Chinese, Turks, etc. When amalgamation<br />

absorbs the whites and neg-roes of a nation, the physical<br />

and mental characters of the White are blended<br />

with those of the <strong>Negro</strong> in different proportions among<br />

their mixed-blooded progeny. Hence, as in the case<br />

of our mixed-bloods, they present every shade of complexion.<br />

But, throug-h their marriages among- themselves,<br />

continued for many centuries, the proportion<br />

of white and black blood in the tribe or nation becomes<br />

equally distributed to every member of it. When this<br />

occurs, their physical and mental characters become<br />

fixed. <strong>The</strong>se fixed characters are then transmitted to<br />

their offspring, throug-h the influence of the law of<br />

heredity.<br />
