this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts<br />

of the earth." [l. Sam. xvii. :45-46.J<br />

This indicates that there were ''wild beasts of the<br />

earth*' in that region in that day. <strong>The</strong>y had doubtless<br />

been emancipated. And it is significant that every on€<br />

of the great nations of that region, with the exception of<br />

a scattered remnant of the Israelites, are destroyed from<br />

off the earth and their civilizations are in ruins. Later<br />

on, we shall have occasion to refer to the Philistine's<br />

challenge to David, with its accompanying threat.<br />

that is a man eater.<br />

Thus,<br />

"beast," or ape,<br />

Yet, not one of the recognized apes<br />

of to-day, are man eaters. What became of this great<br />

man-eating ape? When we appeal to science to solve<br />

this problem, she promptl}^ invades the so-called "human<br />

species," and points us to the <strong>Negro</strong>, as the highest grade<br />

of ape, and the only ape that is a man eater. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>Negro</strong> is not only a man eater, but he feeds upon the<br />

flesh of his own kindred, and -even upon his own offspring,<br />

as v/ell as upon that of otlier apes. Tliough the<br />

<strong>Negro</strong> made his appearance upon the earth as the ''beast<br />

of the earth," and is sometimes referred to by that name,<br />

it is not the only name, nor the one most frequentl}^ applied<br />

to him in scripture. This was simply the name<br />

which God applied to the <strong>Negro</strong> previous to the creation<br />

of man. <strong>The</strong> task of naming the animals devolved upon
