Batikrolls Founder, Nura Alkhatib
The inspiration to begin these cakes also came
partially from Nura's mother. To this, Nura said, "My
mum always loved making desserts and cakes that
she found in magazines, cookbooks and TV cooking
shows. She always made cookies or desserts that
were a little more meticulous than usual. I suppose,
I was inclined to appreciating pretty and petite
desserts. So, I was always on the hunt for sweet
treats that looked and tasted amazing. She is 63
years old and still passionately loves baking like
she did 30 years ago."
Nura said she used one of her mother's popular
Swiss roll recipe and fused it with inspiring roll cake
art that she saw from places like Japan, Thailand
and Indonesia. "My aim was to continue this
tradition and share some of my mum's beloved
cakes with more people."
Asked on whether there are plans to open a physical
bakery, Nura said as demands always exceeded
their expectations, they are looking to expand their
kitchen space to cater for more baking artists to
produce more Batikrolls.
"Our distribution channel will primarily stay online at
this stage but we aim to adopt a travelling pop-up
shop model so we can share Batikrolls in many cities
and locations. We are getting so many requests
from different locations around Malaysia and Asia,
we hope to cater for these people with a popup
shop in their locations." So, she added that a
pop-up store in your nearest town or city is a high
possibility.
Due to courier restrictions in transporting a food
item, Batikrolls only takes orders from neighbouring
countries. Hence, it is currently only able to fulfil
requests from Singapore, Malaysia and during
festive periods, for Brunei.
Deliveries to west coast of Malaysia, is a next day service, done via a refrigerated
truck. Deliveries to Brunei are only done during festive periods when the
Batikrolls team hand carries the cakes to the country. The 22cm rolls will last
one month when stored in the freezer or three days when stored in the fridge.
