Sustainability
Heart of our Business
Malaysia Airports General Manager
(Engineering), Ir. Khairiah Salleh
Sustainability is at the heart of operations at Malaysia Airports. Respecting both people and planet
is crucial in developing a business that achieves long-term success and to continue operating in a
way that recognises impact on the world around us and local communities, Convergence speaks
to Malaysia Airports General Manager (Engineering), Ir. Khairiah Salleh on how Malaysia Airports
manages its Environmental Consciousness. She explains how innovative sustainability initiatives will
create an environment that values and inspires others.
Malaysia Airports strives to implement its environmental
management systematically on the basis of its environmental
vision of 'To create an environmental-friendly and sustainable
airport city' which is aligned to its ultimate vision of 'To be the
global leader in creating airport cities'.
As an airport operator that wishes to make every possible
attempt to minimise the potential risk associated with its
operations, Khairiah said an Environmental Management
Committee (EMC) was established in the third quarter of 2016
to oversee the implementation of its environmental policies
and their practicability.
"I have been tasked to chair this cross-functional committee
comprising of 12 internal staff relevant to drive our goals forward.
We have charted a five-year roadmap detailing plans we intend
to carry out and several plans are already in progress."
Khairiah said the team met regularly and discussed matters
with the management on a quarterly basis in a year.
Energy
Malaysia Airports' efforts in energy management are directed
towards monitoring, analysing and optimising the use of
energy sources, driving down operational costs and
contributing to a greener environment.
"The bulk of our financial expenditure stems from electricity.
With electricity tariffs rising, it becomes a rising burden to manage
operational costs but someone has to find ways in doing so."
In 2016, the total energy consumption at international and
domestic airports registered at 505,106,878 kWh which is an
increase of 8,661,076 kWh when compared to figures from 2015.
Despite the marginal increase in total energy consumption,
the EMC has rolled out several initiatives which include the
energy dashboard monitoring system that provides efficient
reporting and billing which enables immediate action to be
taken to reduce energy demand. This initiative has contributed
to 11% in savings for the year 2016 with 7% of savings from
KL International Airport (KLIA) and klia2.
Apart from that, the building management system (BMS)
monitors and controls energy consumption at KLIA and klia2.
In 2016, 7.1 million kWh at KLIA and 4.1 million kWh at klia2
were saved compared to 2015 figures.
KLIA, a bright landmark both during the day and night, is home
to many light bulbs. The implementation of replacing LED bulbs
