Sustainability is at the heart of operations at Malaysia Airports. Respecting both people and planet<br />

is crucial in developing a business that achieves long-term success and to continue operating in a<br />

way that recognises impact on the world around us and local communities, <strong>Convergence</strong> speaks<br />

to Malaysia Airports General Manager (Engineering), Ir. Khairiah Salleh on how Malaysia Airports<br />

manages its Environmental Consciousness. She explains how innovative sustainability initiatives will<br />

create an environment that values and inspires others.<br />

Malaysia Airports strives to implement its environmental<br />

management systematically on the basis of its environmental<br />

vision of 'To create an environmental-friendly and sustainable<br />

airport city' which is aligned to its ultimate vision of 'To be the<br />

global leader in creating airport cities'.<br />

As an airport operator that wishes to make every possible<br />

attempt to minimise the potential risk associated with its<br />

operations, Khairiah said an Environmental Management<br />

Committee (EMC) was established in the third quarter of 2016<br />

to oversee the implementation of its environmental policies<br />

and their practicability.<br />

"I have been tasked to chair this cross-functional committee<br />

comprising of 12 internal staff relevant to drive our goals forward.<br />

We have charted a five-year roadmap detailing plans we intend<br />

to carry out and several plans are already in progress."<br />

Khairiah said the team met regularly and discussed matters<br />

with the management on a quarterly basis in a year.<br />

Energy<br />

Malaysia Airports' efforts in energy management are directed<br />

towards monitoring, analysing and optimising the use of<br />

energy sources, driving down operational costs and<br />

contributing to a greener environment.<br />

"The bulk of our financial expenditure stems from electricity.<br />

With electricity tariffs rising, it becomes a rising burden to manage<br />

operational costs but someone has to find ways in doing so."<br />

In 2016, the total energy consumption at international and<br />

domestic airports registered at 505,106,878 kWh which is an<br />

increase of 8,661,076 kWh when compared to figures from 2015.<br />

Despite the marginal increase in total energy consumption,<br />

the EMC has rolled out several initiatives which include the<br />

energy dashboard monitoring system that provides efficient<br />

reporting and billing which enables immediate action to be<br />

taken to reduce energy demand. This initiative has contributed<br />

to 11% in savings for the year 2016 with 7% of savings from<br />

KL International Airport (KLIA) and klia2.<br />

Apart from that, the building management system (BMS)<br />

monitors and controls energy consumption at KLIA and klia2.<br />

In 2016, 7.1 million kWh at KLIA and 4.1 million kWh at klia2<br />

were saved compared to 2015 figures.<br />

KLIA, a bright landmark both during the day and night, is home<br />

to many light bulbs. The implementation of replacing LED bulbs<br />
