Autumn is upon us. At this time of year, as the days grow shorter and
the sun’s rays begin to cool, we start to think about the changing natural
world. Autumnal leaves start to change in colour, berries and fruit start to
ripen and nuts start to fall. As the leaves drop and vegetation starts to
die back, much more wildlife becomes visible to us as it goes about its
business, preparing for colder weather. Now is the perfect time to get
out and enjoy all the natural wonder of the changing season. Children
will love our Autumn Colours Explorer Group session, on 16th September
10am - 12noon.
September is an important time of year for many bat species, as it is the
start of the mating season. During mating season, females are lured to
males by a special call that the males of the species use. These can
include clicks, purrs and even buzzing noises. Along with thinking about
babies, at this time of year, bats are also concentrating on eating as much
as possible so as to raise their fat stores in preparation for winter. This
increase in activity and vocalisations make it an ideal time of year to
detect these winged wonders in the night sky. We have our wonderful
Bat Night running on 29th September. Learn about bats from bat experts
through a presentation. Then, weather dependant, head out with them
onto the reserve for a guided walk with their bat detectors at the ready.
This extremely popular event books up fast, so be quick and get your
space.
For more information about the reserve or any of our events, please call
We will soon be starting again our
meetings after our summer break. We
always meet on the second Monday
of the month in the Carrick Centre,
Houston at 7.30. The first date is the
11th September.
Our first meeting of the year is usually
a planning evening when we plan our
syllabus for the year and chat about
the sequences we have been making
and the images we have taken and
show any work we have done over
the summer.
Why don’t you join us? We are a very
small and friendly club and we are all
very happy to share our knowledge
of making sequences using our own
images and setting them to music. If
you would like to join and discover
how to use all those images you have
on your computer, then this may be for
you. We use images from holidays,
local beauty spots, sport, nature,
space etc. And we are only limited by
our imaginations!
