Gryffe High School
Adam has fun at Scottish Space School
New S6 pupil Adam Harrison achieved selection for a week
long residential place at Scottish Space School. This took
place at the University of Strathclyde. Well done Adam on your selection.
Here is what Adam had to say about his experience.
‘Space school was an amazing experience, all focused around engineering,
learning, making friends and just having fun. The one hundred of us
there were sorted into ten groups, ready to complete multiple challenges
throughout the week. I found myself becoming really close friends with my
teammates as we worked together. The challenges themselves ranged
from building working model rockets, to performing on stage with your
teammates. Each night we had a lecture, but not a long, boring one; each
of the lectures was given by either an astronaut, or someone who works at
NASA. Each one was both incredibly interesting, and very inspirational.
Each team was given a mentor, an engineering student of the university
who had previously attended Space School. Each one had so much to
say about their fi elds, and I learned a lot about the different electrical
engineering courses from our team’s mentor. The entire event was a
perfect combination of fun and learning. I came away from the week with a
lot of new knowledge and a lot of new friends.’
A helping hand with results
Clinical Hypnotherapist scores 80 A Passes in this years Results.
51
Mo Ferrington is delighted with her 80 ‘A’ passes in this years exams,
achieved by 18 Student/Clients which is 16% up on last year.
Mo said, “Helping students focus and apply themselves to revision and
relax into the Zone has done the trick and the positive results have the
added bonus of Confidence to go on and achieve greater results in the
future. I couldn’t be more pleased for them and I look forward to the next
intake”.
Abbey Nursery
Well I think I must start off by asking
the question – where was our summer!
Hopefully many of you were lucky either
in Scotland or elsewhere if chasing the
sun.
This however didn’t deter our very
creative staff who created a fantastic
Summer Programme of themes and
activities for the children over the six
weeks break and the children had great
fun. I think the Little Ladybirds were the
happiest with their beach week when
the sun shone most of the time and the
children had fun in the paddling pool and
played in the sand as if they were at the seaside!
Forest Kindergarten was
continued over the summer
period as the children just love
being outdoors and exploring
and they enjoyed scavenging
for flowers and leaves to create
some ‘natural art’, as well as
building dens and playing with the
mud. Don’t blame us Mum if they
come home dirty – that surely
means they have been busy! The
Houston Stones have captured
the imaginations of all children at the nursery and they were constantly
asking to go for a walk around the village to find stones and take pictures.
Obviously they were careful and considerate enough to put them back and
we applaud those children who came up with this wonderful idea.
With such a big staff team there are still some practitioners off on holiday
just now but generally its ‘back to reality’ and the pre school playroom are
getting to know their new keyworkers and pooling ideas for new themes and
interests to explore over the coming months. We use a simple method of
‘What we know, what we would like to know and what we have learnt’ when
following children’s interests and
developing new knowledge and
skills and we are always amazed
by the ideas they come up with.
Numeracy through Play is a
big focus area for the nursery’s
improvement plan this year and
this will be an exciting time for
everyone as we look at new and
innovative ways to encourage
children’s mental maths ability and
how these skills can be used in a variety of ways. Our Parents Information
Evening will give more detail on this and also our comprehensive Transition
Programme leading into next year.
Finally, I would like to say how wonderful the floral display looks outside
St Fillans Primary School – it really does provide a real welcome into the
village.
