Topper
Team Racing
The Sailing Club recently held its annual
Topper Team Racing event making for
a very entertaining couple of hours. It
was probably our best yet.
Despite the forecast, that I saw of very
little wind, we had a good constant
breeze all afternoon. 12 members
took part in the team racing - 3 cadets,
3 ladies and the rest. I mistakenly
misunderstood that Brian was not going
to take part - but he was soon required
as a substitute although it involved
undergoing a change of sex twice during
the course of afternoon (we all knew when Brian was on the water....”up up,
up...”), Oliver’s dog Bonnie set sail in a
topper then appeared firstly on Oliver’s
boat then on David’s (Oliver’s son, out
in his Contender) and there seemed to
be some sort of competition to throw
people off the pontoon into the water
at one point - amazingly not institigated
by the cadets!
Once cadets Tony Fitzgerald and Euan
Wong got to grips with the rules there
was no stopping them, Jamie McMillan
having raced the last time we held this
event was already well versed in the
tactics especially when racing against his father. Tony won the prize for the
most agressive action towards Angus (who failed in his normal obligatory
capsize - this was provided by Jon Hasler and George Donaldson instead.)
Mike McMillan was the winner overall The event was run very efficiently by
Peter Collings. I think it would be fair to say there were a lot of laughs and a
lot of fun was had by everyone. We only do this once a year but its a great
break from our normal racing programme, fun for the spectators to watch
and produces some interesting sailing tactics. www.castlesemplesc.co.uk
Scotland Women Win Big In
Europe
Ex Gryffe High School and Birkmyre player Louise McMillan was picked
to play for the Scotland Womens 7s team in the European Cup which was
held over two legs in the Czech Republic and Hungary in July. Over the
two legs the Scots scored almost 500 points for the loss of only 12, which
convincingly ensured their promotion to the European premier league which
will see them play England and top dogs Russia next season. Louise, seen
her scoring her first of two tries, was taking part in her first full season of 7s
for Scotland having been a part of the much improved women’s six Nations
squad at the beginning of this year.
With the new season about to kick off, Scotland are hoping to carry their
much improved form into the 2018 six nations competition. In the meantime
the squad members have been working as ambassadors for the SRU’s
#BeTheBestYou campaign which is encouraging girls and women of all
ages to give rugby a try.
