The Embroiderers’ Guild is the home of stitch and textile art and the international voice for embroidery. The Guild welcomes everyone with an interest in any area of embroidery and we are proud to be recognised as a voice for raising the profi le of textile and stitched art for students, professionals and stitchers of all abilities, or anyone who simply appreciates fabric and thread. Closer to home, the Bridge of Weir branch undertook a survey of members’ views and at an EGM in May we agreed a new programme structure. We all know that the dark winter nights and poor roads are no fun, so we have changed our meetings to avoid those weeks of December, January and February when the weather’s likely to be at its worst – yes, it’s all relative in the West of Scotland! In addition, our bi-monthly meetings will alternate between evenings and afternoons to provide more options for busy members. This means we will also alternate between The Bridge (evenings) and Freeland Church (afternoons). Our opening meeting’s AGM on 6th at 7.30pm in The Bridge will also introduce the new syllabus and catch up with the summer’s activities. This will include a Show and Tell based on “What I did in my holidays”. Bring along your projects (especially the unfi nished ones with happy memories that complement the blank fabric). On 20th September we’ll meet at 2pm in the Rear Hall of Freeland Church for the fi rst of this season’s speakers, Sue Quinn. Sue’s an award-winning textile artist who creates wonderful collectable bears and woodland creatures for clients around the world. Her books and patterns have helped crafters across the globe to convert felt and fabric into adorable companions, so we’re very excited to have this busy and talented lady share her time and experience with us. Another key date for your diary - our 4th October meeting is another evening meeting in The Bridge, when Malcolm Lochead, the renowned artist and tutor will visit. Many of you will know his extensive body of work on large public projects and high profi le commissions, both ecclesiastical and commercial, so we’re very excited to have him along. More about that meeting in next month’s issue. We hope to show you that even though we are called a “Guild” there is nothing stuffy or exclusive about us! We welcome beginners and those who already stitch or are interested in textiles and textile art, whether you use hand or machine needles, paint, ink or glue (or any combination thereof!). At our meetings you’ll fi nd like-minded individuals who are ready to share their experience and love of craft. Do come along – whether you are a fi rst time visitor or a returning Branch member, hopefully we’ll make you so welcome, you’ll want to be a member! I understand that the roundabout was designed by a developer to national standards and there are no issues with its capacity to accommodate long vehicles but unfortunately “unforeseen” underground problems have resulted in design changes to the sewerage network requiring additional works. Temporary traffi c signals will be required for these works to be fi nished till 10th December. Another developer that appears to be taking things to excess is on Clevans Road in BoW, in this case the road works are to connect the development’s water supply to a very deep water main and this is what is taking the time, however, it appears to many that the contractor is using the road as site access and standing for his vehicles, in any event, to close a road for months on end just seems wrong. I recently met with the Eleanor Laing, MP for Epping Forest and Deputy Speaker for the House of Commons and we had a very interesting discussion on promoting Paisley’s bid for City of Culture 2021. I hope everyone will get together behind this bid and there are a number of ways you can help and these are shown on the Paisley 2021 website. At the last full council meeting I had a couple of motions approved. The Council now recognises that there are many footpaths and pavements which are in private ownership and that some are poorly maintained by their owners. Where a community group expresses a desire to carry out improvements to a footway then the council will provide support, assistance and guidance in establishing the ownership, potential funding opportunities and to the footpaths and pavements being designated offi cial rights of way. I hope that this will lead to a number of footpaths being adopted by the council. The other motion approved was to do with the obstruction of dropped kerbs at junctions by parked vehicles which is an offence. The Council agreed that they have power to make Traffi c Regulation Orders and agreed to implement them where there has been a consistent pattern of obstruction and I hope that this will make it easier in the long run for individuals who have a need through mobility issues to access and cross roads safely. As mentioned in my July article “please don’t forget to claim free school meals if you are entitled as it helps the school with extra fi nance”. All members, old and new will be made most welcome, tea coffee and home baking will be served. The SWI recently celebrated its centenary, and all the Renfrewshire members attended an Afternoon Tea at Gleddoch Hotel in July. I have received complaints about seagulls causing offence in the village. The golden rule is not to feed them, make sure bins are secure and at nesting time destroy the nests early. They cannot be shot. Kilmacolm Cemetery is full, with no lairs for sale. Preliminary discussions with adjacent land owners is ongoing to investigate the possibility of land being sold to the Council for Cemetery expansion. Expansion at Port Glasgow, Greenock and Knocknairshill Cemeteries is not feasible. Our external fl ooding consultant has carried out detailed hydrological studies in respect of the Glenmosston Burn at Gowkhouse Road, which fl ows down Gillburn Road to Market Place. A design has been prepared for upgrading the existing culvert at Market Place to Smithy Brae. An outline scheme for an additional culvert at Gowkhouse Road has hit problems. Further investigation work on this aspect is ongoing. Studies into fl ooding at The Gotter Water in Quarriers has established that pluvial (overland) fl ooding is the primary cause. We are fi nalising the design of a culvert that that will divert water fl ow back into the Gotter Water at an appropriate location. BoW Angling Club will be pleased with this solution as diverting upstream would have potentially affected spawning grounds. The works on the Weir are due to commence soon to allow salmon to pass along the Gotter Water. On the 22nd June 11 parking tickets were issued in the morning, 6 for disc offences. The village was busy with visitors. The withdrawal of the discs may now go to a public hearing with an Independent Reporter. Cost £10,000. Again we need to listen to our traders who must be supported. The Local Plan has reached its next stage with a Members-Offi cers Working Group being appointed to consider matters. Carsemeadow Quarriers had 124 objections, West of Quarry Drive Kilmacolm 137 and Planetreeyetts 124. The process is democratic and residents are listened to at all stages. My worry is that there are development sites in the Village where developers will simply ignore local democracy and appeal matters straight to Scottish Ministers and claim they are supporting Government housing policy. We saw with the Greenock Windfarm, that Ministers ignored 700 objectors and a refusal by the Council and gave permission based on their energy policy.
