kilmacolm & quarriers 42 kilmacolm & quarriers Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London, it was reported over the summer period that Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) panels had been used in three Inverclyde Schools, one of them being Kilmacolm Primary. Council offi cers have advised that the type of panels used on Grenfell Tower were not used in our schools and those used are appropriate to the type of buildings and installed in accordance with Scottish building standards and regulations. In the case of Kilmacolm Primary only very limited areas of the school – at the entrances to both the main school and nursery and the water tower – have ACM panels. An update report on the preparation of the new Local Development Plan was considered by the Environment and Regeneration Committee on 31st August. The report provided initial feedback on the recent consultation on the Main Issues Report. This report had highlighted a possible requirement for additional land for housing development in the Kilmacolm/Quarrier’s Village area. A large number of representations were received, most of which are opposed to development at the locations identifi ed in the report. These representations and all the other issues arising from the consultation will be considered by a Members-Offi cers Group ahead of the publication of the draft Local Development Plan in March 2018. The Environment and Regeneration Committee also considered a report on the potential expansion of a number of Inverclyde cemeteries, including Kilmacolm. There have been no new lairs available for sale at Kilmacolm Cemetery for a number of years. Offi cers’ investigations have concluded that land adjacent to the cemetery may be suitable for the provision of new lairs and they have entered into discussions with the owner with a view to purchasing suffi cient ground to permit the expansion of the cemetery. A report on the outcome of these discussions will be submitted to a future Committee meeting. The Trust was formed in 1969, and our Executive Committee meets every month, reviewing all published planning applications, whether high profi le or more domestic. We respond to each one, in the spirit of protecting and enhancing the beautiful villages of Kilmacolm and Quarriers and our countryside. Local planning has become very high profi le, and initial proposals for the next Local Development Plan roused strong public interest over potential developments on Green Belt land. As reported in May, we consulted our members by email before making a detailed response (available from our website). We opposed the proposed encroachments to Green Belt and commented on a number of other issues. Subsequently we engaged directly and robustly with Inverclyde Planning over the biomass project at Glebe Court. It’s not just about planning - we are delighted to support an initiative by KCT member and a former Chairman, Professor Frank A Walker, who has been compiling a data base of information on all (most) houses built in Kilmacolm between 1870 and 1920. This has entailed research in Building Authority records, censuses, etc., and with individual residents. To date almost 400 houses have been logged on. Inevitably, however, much information remains elusive. If you own a Kilmacolm house built in the 1870-1920 period and would like to assist in this research, Professor Walker would be grateful for your help, specifi cally in terms of the following: The current name of your house and the address; any previous name(s) of your house; the date of feu contract of building and the fi rst owner, together with any other point of interest. september 2017 kilmacolm & quarriers Kilmacolm Bridge Club Kilmacolm Bridge Club resumes play on Monday 4th September. We meet in the New Community Centre and play commences at 7.10pm. The Club is a member of the Scottish Bridge Union with two teams playing in the Renfrewshire Bridge League. Please pop in and see him if you want to share any concerns or need advice. kilmacolm & quarriers 43 As this is my fi rst article for the Gryffe Advertizer, I thought an introduction would be in order. As a child I grew up in Bishopton and moved to Langbank, where I lived from my early teens until I moved to Inverclyde. My wife is a teacher within Inverclyde and my two children attend schools within Port Glasgow. Before being elected in May 2017 to represent Ward 1 of Inverclyde Council, I worked full time as an Associate for a multinational civil engineering consultancy. As a Member of Inverclyde Council I am a member of the following committees and boards: Environment and Regeneration Committee Education and Communities Committee Audit Committee General Purposes Board Petitions Committee (Vice Convener) Police and Fire Scrutiny Sub Committee Housing (Landlord Regeneration) Sub Committee Having a strong interest in the use and value of transport links, I am eager to consult with constituents in Ward 1 on the current transport provision, particularly public transport, for Kilmacolm and Quarriers Village. Since becoming elected, the Main Issues Report (MIR) for the Inverclyde Local development Plan (LDP) has been has been a major concern for constituents with respect to the potential sites for housing. From a strategic point of view I would favour the development of brownfi eld sites and existing identifi ed sites over development of greenfi eld sites where possible. The process from MIR to issue of the draft LDP will be undertaken over the next 6 months and I will continue to engage with constituents on this matter, which will have a lasting effect on the villages. Lastly, I wish to congratulate St Columba’s School Duke of Edinburgh’ Award Expedition Volunteers who will be presented with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service to on the 18th of September. A great achievement! My next two formal surgeries will be on the 27th of September (St Francis School, Port Glasgow) from 7pm - 8pm and on the 21st of October (Kilmacolm Community Centre) from 10am - 11am.
