ISTVÁN BERECZ, „ÖRÖKÖS
ARANYSARKANTYÚS” DANCER, FOLK MUSIC
ARTISTIC LEADER OF „FONÓ BUDAI ZENEHÁZ”
YOU PARTICIPATE IN ASSEMBLING THE SUNDAY PROGRAMMES OF BUDAPEST
WINE FESTIVAL, AS A FOLK MUSIC ARTISTIC LEADER OF THE 22-YEAR-OLD PRIMA
PRIMISSIMA PRIZE-WINNING FONÓ BUDAI ZENEHÁZ. WHAT ARE YOUR EXPERIEN-
CES, HOW THE FESTIVAL REPRESENTS THE HUNGARIAN CULTURE AND HOW COULD
YOU COOPERATE WITH THE FESTIVAL TEAM IN ASSEMBLING THE PROGRAMMES?
I have been working together with teams of large Hungarian events for many years. Moreover we
represent Hungary in foreign countries as well. Cooperation with the Festival was obvious because
Fono Budai Zeneház has the best folk musicians and folk dancers of the country, so we would like
to present a slice from this repertoire to the audience. As for the organising it is a pleasure for us
that the management of the Festival considers the traditional cultural expressions (TCEs) important.
What do you think which motifs displayed in folklor dances can convey the essence of Hungarian
culture?
Richness in motifs and possible variations of most Hungarian dances is unique in the world. This
unique character origins from the freedom of the dancer. Self-expression: art depends on individuality.
In your oppinion which common points can connect folk dance and wine festival?
The cheer they bring. According to Ágoston Bíró „Zsukás Guszti bácsi”: „hungry man can not work,
thirsty man can not dance.” Obviously we never go on stage drunk because we will not be able to
perform on stage. However when it comes to merriment we do not say „no” to drinking.
