For the 2016 movie Fan, in which Shah Rukh Khan portrayed both
a superstar and the obsessed fan, Red Chillies VFX transformed
Khan to make him look 20 years younger. In addition to making him
younger, leaner and smaller in build, they changed his facial features,
like the size of his nose and texture of his skin.
Founded in 2002, Red Chillies
Entertainment, based in the heart of
Mumbai, India, has blossomed into a major
motion picture production and distribution
company, and in 2006 added a premier
visual effects house called Red Chillies
VFX. Shah Rukh Khan, a noted ‘Bollywood’
actor, created the parent company.
Ra.One and Krrish 3 were two early
movies in which the visual effects side of
the company made a name for itself. Red
Chillies VFX is now also a post-production
studio specializing in visual effects
for feature films and commercials. The
company has established itself as one of
India’s top visual effects studios in that part
of the world with an eye on homegrown
projects as well as international activities.
Says Keitan Yadav, Chief Operating
Officer and VFX Producer, about the
growth of the industry and Red Chillies
VFX: “I think if I compare the last 10 years
of filmmaking, we have progressed very
significantly, in terms of genre, complexity,
turnover, usage and awareness of VFX in
the industry. It has boomed!”
Adds Haresh “Harry” Hingorani, Chief
Creative Officer and VFX Supervisor,
“There is a big lineup of VFX films like
Robot 2.0 which will open the road for a
lot of production houses, directors and
producers. I think we have a bright future.
It will be an era of biopics, mythological,
historical films and, with the likes of Netflix
and Amazon, the scale and requirements of
VFX is going up. It will be the golden years
of the VFX industry.”
Among current VFX film work are such
titles as Khaidi No. 150, Raees, Phillauri,
Tubelight and Judwaa 2. More recently,
Red Chillies VFX has been involved with
such major movies as Chak De! India,
Krrish 3, Don: The Chase Begins Again,
Dostana and De Dana Dan. Current
projects include an in-house and muchawaited
project, Dwarf, featuring owner,
Shah Rukh Khan.
Red Chillies is also looking to set up a
VR facility, and they are currently setting
up a VR team.
