IN PURSUIT

OF POWER

YOU WANT THE POWER TO GROW YOUR COLOUR

BUSINESS; SHE WANTS THE POWER TO BE THE BEST

BLONDE SHE CAN POSSIBLY BE. MAKE IT HAPPEN

WITH BLONDERFUL BY REVLON PROFESSIONAL

DID YOU KNOW that more and more women in high-level jobs are

blonde? In fact almost half of all female chief executives in the US

are blonde. They may be stereotyped as being ‘bimbos’, but the

fact of the matter is more women in positions of power are blonde.

Blondes also spend the most time and money in salons and

expect the best.

Now you can give them the power to be the best blonde they

can possibly be with Blonderful by Revlon Professional. Blonderful

is Revlon Professional’s fi rst range of lightening products that

incorporates PLEXFORCE Inside. Unlike other additives, this

technology is incorporated into the formulas, making the service

more reliable and comfortable for the hairdresser. As PLEXFORCE

Inside is already added into the lightening products, it means

there’s no time-consuming extra steps. You simply carry out your

normal lightening service with the knowledge that you’re helping to

maintain the hair’s structural bonds, reducing breakage and leaving

the hair looking healthy.

But the best thing about Blonderful? You’re giving your clients

the power to choose a premium service, enabling you to charge

more and build client loyalty.

A new technology, PLEXFORCE Inside is

designed to protect hair from the inside.

Featuring a combination of maleic acid

and a conditioner that penetrates the

hair fibre to protect and maintain the

hair’s structural bonds, PLEXFORCE

Inside helps hair to retain

its original physical

characteristics.

LIFE IS

BLONDERFUL

HOW DOES HAVING MORE COLOUR CLIENTS SOUND? WHAT

ABOUT BEING ABLE TO CHARGE MORE FOR A SERVICE?

REVLON PROFESSIONAL HAS THE ANSWER

STEP 1 BLONDERFUL BLEACHING POWDER

• Includes PLEXFORCE Inside to help protect and preserve the hair’s structure

• Can lighten up to seven levels or eight levels with optimal neutralisation,

depending on your powder choice

• It’s 750g, which means more product for more services

• Mix with the Revlon Professional Creme Peroxide oxidisers

STEP 2 BLONDERFUL BONDING DEFENDER

• A post-lightening protective treatment formulated to seal the cuticle

• Include PLEXFORCE Inside to help protect and preserve the hair’s structure

• Interacts with post-colour shampoo to create a protective layer that helps hair

to return to its natural state

• Apply on damp hair after rinsing the bleaching mix and before shampooing

STEP 3 BLONDERFUL BOND MAINTAINER

• This take-home product complements the Blonderful lightening service and the

Bond Defender pre-treatment service

CREATIVE HEAD ADVERTORIAL

• Includes PLEXFORCE Inside to help protect and preserve the hair’s structure

between Blonderful lightening services

THAT’S NOT ALL, THE BLONDERFUL RANGE ALSO INCLUDES TONING AND

LIGHTENING PRODUCTS THAT CAN BE CARRIED OUT IN ONLY FIVE MINUTES…

BLONDERFUL 5’ SOFT LIGHTENER

• Softens the contrast between highlights and natural base

• Helps achieve a brighter, more luminous blonde shade

• Suitable for use on the same day or between highlighting services

• Mix with Revlon Professional Soft Lightener Energizer

• It’s ammonia free

BLONDERFUL 5’ SOFT TONER

• Neutralises and tones highlights without altering previously coloured or

natural hair

• Is available in four shades

• Suitable for use on the same day as the service or for maintaining optimal

colour results until the next highlighting services

• Mix with Revlon Professional Soft Toner Energizer

• It’s ammonia free

RANGE AND THE REVLON PROFESSIONAL COLOUR LINES

CREATIVE HEAD ADVERTORIAL

Strip back and get a clearer

perspective – the age of excess is over as

we enter a new era in beauty that’s a direct

counterpoint to the visual excess we see day to

day on our Instagram feeds. The DESIGN collection

by Revlon Professional doesn’t want to overwhelm the

senses, rather it seeks to provide you with an aesthetic

that’s pure and clear. Blonderful from Revlon Professional

perfectly complements this collection. Easy and simple to

use, this revolutionary bleaching product contains a molecule

capable of preserving bonds, limiting hair damage. It requires

no additional mixing, reducing the time and effort required by

the colourist and the results are clear: dramatically healthylooking

hair for every technical service, blondes, bleaches,

fantasy colour and balayage.

RISING STAR

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE

A HAIRDRESSER?

When I was 11 years old I had a

terrible experience in a barber

shop, so much so that I didn’t

get my hair cut for two years.

When I finally gave in, I went

to a local salon and I remember

how much I loved it and how

it made me feel. I’ve wanted to

pass on that feeling ever since.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF

IN 10 YEARS’ TIME?

I would like to move to

Vancouver, I believe there’s

a gap in the market for the

type of hairdressing I like,

doing photoshoots or opening

my own salon. I’ve visited

the city and I love it, and

being so close to the United

States makes it very handy

to do session work on shows,

should the opportunity arise.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM

Session styling for

TRENDS

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

KEEP IT COOL

Shorter days and cooler weather is just around the corner, but don’t worry – L’Oréal Professionnel has spotted two must-have

trends to keep that spring in your client’s step going into the Autumn/Winter season. First up is #TigerEye, worn by Gizele Oliveira

(pictured above left). The look brings the subtlety of balayage to a darker base with sumptuous caramel highlights, perfect for

adding an abundance of dimension and depth to the hair. L’Oréal Professionnel brand ambassador Hailey Baldwin (above right)

models the second eye-catching look of the season, #RootShadow. Perfect for the blonde client looking for a subtle transition into

autumn, this look creates a beautiful blend between the base colour and the blonde mid-lengths and ends, allowing the seamless

and elegant shift from one season to the next without the harsh regrowth.

CREATIVE HEAD ADVERTORIAL

BECAUSE TODAY’S HAIR colourists

are like make-up artists, you have access

to professional techniques and tools,

cutting-edge formulas and a vast colour

palette, enabling you to offer customised

and bespoke services to satisfy your

clients’ needs and desires.

Each client is unique, with features that

they are proud of (and perhaps a couple

of insecurities too!) so the consultation

is the perfect opportunity to discover

more about them, to study their unique

face, the shape, the bone structure

and the features, allowing you (as the

consummate professional!) to identify the

colour service that will best suit them.

With the natural look seen as a sign of

a strong personality, coupled with the

craze of #nomakeup (more than 10m

Instagram posts!), hair colour like makeup

is becoming a powerful way for your

client to express her freedom. It can

express what makes her different, her

moods and her personality, with discreet

touches of colour or by doing something a

little more radical.

Ensuring that there’s a strong

consultation will enable the client to feel

reassured that personalised service has

been created just for them.

INCREASE YOUR PROFITS WITH SMARTBOND

€10,340

IN JUST FIVE MONTHS!

That’s how much revenue Smartbond, the revolutionary bonding agent

from L’Oréal Professionnel, bought to Hair Creations’ two salons since March

2017. Just think of the revenue potential for your salon! “Smartbond is

straightforward to use,” says director Anna Munnelly, pictured above with

her brother and fellow director, Alan. “We also found Smartbond to have a

better cosmetic finish.” Here are Anna’s tips to maximise Smartbond success:

1. We offered a free Smartbond service with every colour for the first three

weeks; this not only delighted clients but allowed the team to just go for it!

We all became a lot stronger in our capacity to sell Smartbond, a result which

made it well worth doing the free promo.

2. It’s not just for blondes! Let staff and clients know Smartbond can help

brunettes to battle against fade.

3. Talking about it as a strengthening service can help clients to distinguish

between Smartbond and a conditioning treatment. It works on the internal

structure of the hair, restoring its condition.

story

FLATIRON, DUBLIN

What are the magic ingredients for creating a salon as beautiful as

Flatiron? “It took a great deal of faith, imagination, and wild optimism

to see the salon as it is now”, says owner Carlin Doran. “It’s a listed

building so we were protective and restorative in our approach.

Healing as opposed to transforming!” With a fi nal result this gorgeous,

you might suspect that Carlin had some professional help, and

you’d be correct – his wife Aoife is an interior designer and the

driving force behind the look of the salon. Bespoke furniture ensures

everything is perfectly placed within the Flatiron, with each detail

carefully considered. “Our counters were designed by Aoife. They are

statement pieces, adding extra height to the mirrors, they draw the

eye up to the soaring ceilings and bounce the natural light.”

SHARING THE SECRETS OF

SUCCESS TO HELP YOU

ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS

CREATIVE HEAD ADVERTORIAL

ROAD TO STARDOM

MARTHA GALVIN, OWNER OF ALLURE HAIR AND BEAUTY SALON

IN CASTLEBAR, CO. MAYO, SHARES HER SECRETS TO SUCCESS

IN THE BEGINNING

“I COME FROM a family of business

people – we had a grocery shop and a

crystal shop to name a few – so starting

my own business came naturally,” says

Martha Galvin, owner of Allure Hair and

Beauty salon. “I’m also the youngest

of six, so I am used to dealing with

people.” Martha joined the hair industry

aged 16, drawn in by the chance to

meet new people, use her hands and

be artistic. “The beauty of hairdressing

is that it doesn’t matter who you are

you’re accepted because of your talent

with your hands,” she says. Martha

opened her own salon when she was 22,

for one reason only: “I wanted to give

hairdressers somewhere to do their job

but also have fun.”

STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

Two years into her career, Martha

discovered competitions, and it

ignited a lifelong passion. “I was

always competitive, so to be able to

do hair competitions was brilliant,”

says Martha. “When you compete,

you have the freedom to do what your

heart wants, and if you’re artistic then

you need that release.” Competitions

like the ALFAPARF Milano Fantastic

Hairdresser Awards, Ireland’s largest

hairdressing awards show which takes

place in Dublin on 5 November, provide

Martha with the perfect platform.

She has her work cut out juggling her

business with her creativity, so it was

important to find the right brand. “I

have always kept up my three elements

of work – my business, my artistic

side and my competition work. I had

to find a company that could combine

education, retail and excellent products

– I couldn’t do it without ALFAPARF

Milano.” Martha is also an educator

for ALFAPARF Milano, and uses her

expertise to design upstyling courses.

“To be an educator, you have to know

more than the skills you’re teaching

– that way you can always provide the

answers,” she adds.

★ Martha has been

hairdressing since

she was 16 and

opened Allure

Hair and Beauty

salon aged 22.

★ She now has

24 staff across

two salons.

KEEP ON LEARNING

Martha has enjoyed working on the

Essential Upstyling and Creative

Upstyling courses: “They are courses for

when you already have skills and you

want to learn how to create and design

work.” And the Begin to Win course is

invaluable: “It’s for people who want

to compete but don’t necessarily come

from competitive salons,” she says.

Martha sends each member of her team

at Allure to a minimum of four external

ALFAPARF Milano courses each year,

along with running weekly courses in

the salon to keep everyone up-to-dates.

She believes learning is the key to

success in the salon. “We have to go

out and get educated,” Martha adds.

“It keeps everything fresh.”

★ In the past 17 years she has won more

than 100 awards including three international

medals and an Icon in Business award

from the Irish Hair Federation (IHF).

★ She also captained the IHF and won two

Irish Bridal Hairdresser of the Year Awards,

Upstylist of the Year and Irish Fantasy

Hairdresser of the Year awards.

★ Martha designs and runs ALFAPARF

Milano Essential Upstyling Step 1, Creative

Upstyling Step 2 and Begin to Win.

The modern face of

colour

Schwarzkopf Professional

With influence from the catwalk and Instagram, hair colour is taking

inspiration from the bright and beautiful world of make-up

Instagram @kimkardashian

IT ALL STARTED WITH Kim

Kardashian West, of course. A

snap of her unblended contouring

sent social media into meltdown.

It suddenly brought a make-up

artist’s secret – tailoring shades

to help slim a nose or accentuate

cheekbones – into the public’s

awareness. Hair colourists have

always created bespoke shades for

clients, but this offered a fantastic opportunity to tie

it in with a cosmetic trend people are fascinated with.

“There has been a surge of people using make-up

to not only change the tones of their skin but also

sculpt their face shape. It has meant that clients are

much more aware that colour isn’t just about your

shade choice but also about placement and how it can

massively alter the shape of your haircut,” explains

Headmasters colour ambassador and L’Oréal Colour

Trophy Ireland judge, Siobhan Jones.

Niamh Paget, colour specialist at Brown Sugar

Ranelagh near Dublin, agrees: “Make-up has been

responsible for the adoption of these colours into

hairdressing. We use a contouring technique in hair

colour to highlight facial features, and a blending

technique for merging colours according to the

change in the seasons.”

One of the most frequent concerns Siobhan Jones

hears from clients is that their hair is lacking in

volume. “Now, with the power of contouring with hair

colour just like you would with make-up, you can give

the illusion of structure and form,” she says. “With

clever light and shadow colour placement you can

make it appear hair has more volume.”

And as the similarities between hair colour as

make-up become better understood, clients become

more open to the idea of experimenting with their

colour. A subtle way of dipping into this trend is with

a rose blush over blonde hair, or braver clients can

transform their look with a rainbow of colours, like

facepaint for hair.

“Colourful hair is arguably the most innovative

move in hair in decades,” says Jenny Dawson, master

colourist at Dylan Bradshaw and part of the team that

won the first L’Oréal Professionnel Style & Colour

Trophy International Awards for Ireland.

truths

Sophia Hilton, owner of Not Another

Salon in London and a L’Oréal

Professionnel Colour Specialist, has

taken the hair world by storm since

winning the UK and Ireland L’Oréal

Colour Trophy in 2013, and she’s

worried about the pressure being

put on her fellow colourists

“Overly retouched Instagram images

flood our clients’ social media, leaving

them with unrealistic expectations.

Each of these ‘perfect’ images represents

how the gap between the highly paid

and regular colourists is widening to a

dangerous degree. Clients are losing faith

in hairdressers’ abilities and, saddest of all,

hairdressers are losing faith in themselves.

Clients bring these videos and images

in and are confused – why can’t their

hairdresser create the same look in their

45-minute appointment on a Saturday?

So, what do we do? I refuse to contribute

to the mess that we are in and I urge you

to do the same. NEVER post or repost an

extreme image without explanation and

when you do hashtag #honestcolourist.

Most importantly, at every opportunity

educate your clients about ‘the truth’ of

modern colouring.”

Enhance eyes… create

the darkest colour shades

on the under layers of a

fringe. This helps make

the line look stronger just

above the eyes, which in

turn brings them out.

Enhance cheekbones…

extend colour with

sectioning so the darker

shades sit down near the

top of the cheekbone.

BLONDME by Schwarzkopf Professional

The tricks of

the (makeup)

trade

“It is a trend that is becoming mainstream –

there are thousands of tags for #colourfulhair

#rainbowhair or #unicornhair.”

“Find out about your clients’ make-up

regime as hair colours are heavily inspired by

cosmetics,” says Zara Lynch, colour expert

at Salon Services. “Some clients are a little

put off by the exaggerated, statement looks

seen on the catwalks, so explain to them how

they can carry key trends in more natural

and understated ways. For example, if your

client’s complexion lends itself to warm or

fiery shades, but they’re looking for a subtler

alternative, talk to them about blended tones,

brushed on like paint.”

Brands have been quick to embrace these

trends and provide the tools to make it

happen. Olaplex, the original colour additive,

has enabled colourists to transform colour

while maintaining hair quality.

L’Oréal Professionnel has launched its

#COLORFULHAIR looks – including

Peekaboo, Candy, Lavender and Mermaid Hair

– and Redken has revealed City Beats, full of

fashion-forward shades. For clients who want

to change their colour as often as their makeup,

the JOICO InstaTint Temporary Color

Shimmer Sprays offer a short-term option,

and Schwarzkopf Professional’s IGORA range

offers intense, permanent brights for stunning

looks. Kenra’s Color Metallic collection is

inspired by shimmering pigments found in

eyeshadows and, echoing the vampy reds of

autumn cosmetics, Ion’s Colour Flash Semi-

Permanent Hair Colours are bang on trend.

Hair colour is changing, giving hairdressers

more freedom and opening up new markets –

it’s an exciting time to be a colourist. “I really

believe that colour is an accessory, and I think

the more we have a younger conversation

around colour like make-up – wash-off colour,

you’re not tied in for life – the better,” explains

Redken color creative director, Josh Wood.

Jenny Dawson agrees that this new breed

of colour can be adapted to suit every client.

“Taking your client to the next level can be

as simple as adding hidden panels of colour

to transform an existing cut,” she says. “All

the while, condition the hair beautifully so it

reflects in a glass-type effect!”

Make a round face

narrower… extend

colour down through the

hairline section to help

slim the facial features.

Bring wide eyes closer

together… colour should

be extended down the

sides, so darker shades

sit at eye level.

Elongate a round face…

lighten the top of the

hair and the ends using

a freehand technique.

To shadow the sides of

the face, use a darker

shade to add depth.

Soften a triangular

face… darken the top of

the head and crown areas

and apply lighter pieces

through the mid-lengths

and ends. This will

lighten under the jawline

and create shadow at the

top of the head.
