honoured 300 long-serving employees at<br />

an awards ceremony at the Smock Alley<br />

Theatre in Dublin. The Peter Mark Long<br />

Service Awards paid homage to employees in<br />

Leinster who have worked at Peter Mark for<br />

more than 10 years, while two staff members<br />

hit their Golden Anniversary of 50 years with<br />

IN THE BEGINNING<br />

“I COME FROM a family of business<br />

people – we had a grocery shop and a<br />

crystal shop to name a few – so starting<br />

my own business came naturally,” says<br />

Martha Galvin, owner of Allure Hair and<br />

Beauty salon. “I’m also the youngest<br />

of six, so I am used to dealing with<br />

people.” Martha joined the hair industry<br />

aged 16, drawn in by the chance to<br />

meet new people, use her hands and<br />

be artistic. “The beauty of hairdressing<br />

is that it doesn’t matter who you are<br />

you’re accepted because of your talent<br />

with your hands,” she says. Martha<br />

opened her own salon when she was 22,<br />

for one reason only: “I wanted to give<br />

hairdressers somewhere to do their job<br />

but also have fun.”<br />

STRENGTH TO STRENGTH<br />

Two years into her career, Martha<br />

discovered competitions, and it<br />

ignited a lifelong passion. “I was<br />

always competitive, so to be able to<br />

do hair competitions was brilliant,”<br />

says Martha. “When you compete,<br />

you have the freedom to do what your<br />

heart wants, and if you’re artistic then<br />

you need that release.” Competitions<br />

like the ALFAPARF Milano Fantastic<br />

Hairdresser Awards, <strong>Ireland</strong>’s largest<br />

hairdressing awards show which takes<br />

place in Dublin on 5 November, provide<br />

Martha with the perfect platform.<br />

She has her work cut out juggling her<br />

business with her creativity, so it was<br />

important to find the right brand. “I<br />

have always kept up my three elements<br />

of work – my business, my artistic<br />

side and my competition work. I had<br />

to find a company that could combine<br />

education, retail and excellent products<br />

Martha sends each member of her team<br />

along with running weekly courses in<br />

the salon to keep everyone up-to-dates.<br />

She believes learning is the key to<br />

success in the salon. “We have to go<br />

out and get educated,” Martha adds.<br />

“It keeps everything fresh.”<br />

With influence from the catwalk and Instagram, hair colour is taking<br />

inspiration from the bright and beautiful world of make-up<br />

IT ALL STARTED WITH Kim<br />

Kardashian West, of course. A<br />

snap of her unblended contouring<br />

sent social media into meltdown.<br />

It suddenly brought a make-up<br />

artist’s secret – tailoring shades<br />

to help slim a nose or accentuate<br />

cheekbones – into the public’s<br />

awareness. Hair colourists have<br />

always created bespoke shades for<br />

clients, but this offered a fantastic opportunity to tie<br />

it in with a cosmetic trend people are fascinated with.<br />

“There has been a surge of people using make-up<br />

to not only change the tones of their skin but also<br />

sculpt their face shape. It has meant that clients are<br />

much more aware that colour isn’t just about your<br />

shade choice but also about placement and how it can<br />

massively alter the shape of your haircut,” explains<br />

Headmasters colour ambassador and L’Oréal Colour<br />

Trophy <strong>Ireland</strong> judge, Siobhan Jones.<br />

Niamh Paget, colour specialist at Brown Sugar<br />

Ranelagh near Dublin, agrees: “Make-up has been<br />

responsible for the adoption of these colours into<br />

hairdressing. We use a contouring technique in hair<br />

colour to highlight facial features, and a blending<br />

technique for merging colours according to the<br />

change in the seasons.”<br />

One of the most frequent concerns Siobhan Jones<br />

hears from clients is that their hair is lacking in<br />

volume. “Now, with the power of contouring with hair<br />

colour just like you would with make-up, you can give<br />

the illusion of structure and form,” she says. “With<br />

clever light and shadow colour placement you can<br />

make it appear hair has more volume.”<br />

And as the similarities between hair colour as<br />

make-up become better understood, clients become<br />

more open to the idea of experimenting with their<br />

colour. A subtle way of dipping into this trend is with<br />

a rose blush over blonde hair, or braver clients can<br />

transform their look with a rainbow of colours, like<br />

facepaint for hair.<br />

“Colourful hair is arguably the most innovative<br />

move in hair in decades,” says Jenny Dawson, master<br />

colourist at Dylan Bradshaw and part of the team that<br />

won the first L’Oréal Professionnel Style & Colour<br />

Trophy International Awards for <strong>Ireland</strong>.<br />

Professionnel Colour Specialist, has<br />

taken the hair world by storm since<br />

winning the UK and <strong>Ireland</strong> L’Oréal<br />

Colour Trophy in 2013, and she’s<br />

worried about the pressure being<br />

put on her fellow colourists<br />

“Overly retouched Instagram images<br />

flood our clients’ social media, leaving<br />

them with unrealistic expectations.<br />

Each of these ‘perfect’ images represents<br />

how the gap between the highly paid<br />

and regular colourists is widening to a<br />

dangerous degree. Clients are losing faith<br />

in hairdressers’ abilities and, saddest of all,<br />

hairdressers are losing faith in themselves.<br />

Clients bring these videos and images<br />

in and are confused – why can’t their<br />

hairdresser create the same look in their<br />

45-minute appointment on a Saturday?<br />

So, what do we do? I refuse to contribute<br />

to the mess that we are in and I urge you<br />

to do the same. NEVER post or repost an<br />

extreme image without explanation and<br />

when you do hashtag #honestcolourist.<br />

Most importantly, at every opportunity<br />

educate your clients about ‘the truth’ of<br />

modern colouring.”<br />

“Find out about your clients’ make-up<br />

regime as hair colours are heavily inspired by<br />

cosmetics,” says Zara Lynch, colour expert<br />

at Salon Services. “Some clients are a little<br />

put off by the exaggerated, statement looks<br />

seen on the catwalks, so explain to them how<br />

they can carry key trends in more natural<br />

and understated ways. For example, if your<br />

client’s complexion lends itself to warm or<br />

fiery shades, but they’re looking for a subtler<br />

alternative, talk to them about blended tones,<br />

brushed on like paint.”<br />

Brands have been quick to embrace these<br />

trends and provide the tools to make it<br />

happen. Olaplex, the original colour additive,<br />

Hair colour is changing, giving hairdressers<br />

more freedom and opening up new markets –<br />

it’s an exciting time to be a colourist. “I really<br />

believe that colour is an accessory, and I think<br />

the more we have a younger conversation<br />

around colour like make-up – wash-off colour,<br />

you’re not tied in for life – the better,” explains<br />
