WHY DO
AMOUNTS OF
CERTAIN VITAMINS
IN SOME ADVOCARE
PRODUCTS EXCEED
100% OF RDI?
Reference
Daily Intakes (RDIs) are
the values for vitamins and minerals
established by the Food and Drug
Administration to ensure adequate nutritional
needs are met for most healthy individuals in all
age groups. These values have been used for many
years and are widely recognized. RDIs are based
on the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs) set
by the Food and Nutrition Board, National Research
Council, Institute of Medicine and National Academy
of Sciences. Many health experts, including all
AdvoCare Scientific & Medical Advisory Board
members, believe that in many cases optimal
nutrition provides benefits not available
with merely adequate nutrition. For
some nutrients, optimal nutrition
is achieved at a level above
100 percent of the RDI.
WHAT ARE
THE BENEFITS
OF DIETARY
SUPPLEMENTS?
ARE DIETARY
SUPPLEMENTS
REGULATED?
Consistently eating healthy food is the desired goal to help promote health, but food
alone may not provide the total daily Recommended Dietary Allowances you need for
sufficient nutrition. That’s why the combination of a healthy diet, exercise and taking daily
supplements is an effective way to enhance your overall wellness.
A number of local, state and federal agencies regulate dietary supplements including the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA regulates the control processes that establish criteria
for the manufacturing, storage, labeling and logistics of dietary supplements, foods and drugs.
Dietary supplements are under their own set of rules and regulations separate from those for
“conventional” foods and drug products (both prescription and over-the-counter). Dietary
supplement manufacturers are responsible for ensuring a dietary supplement is safe before
it is marketed. The FDA is then responsible for monitoring manufacturer’s quality systems
and product reports. The agency is charged with taking action against any unsafe dietary
supplement product after it reaches the market including products that use ingredients
banned by the FDA. In addition, manufacturers and distributors must make sure product
label information is truthful and not misleading.
