Competing in any sport involves endurance, a training regimen
and the mental stamina to push yourself out of your comfort zone.
For Ashley Sprague and Alberto Medellin, the passion they discovered for triathlons and ultra-marathons, with
the support of AdvoCare products and unwavering dedication, has helped them go from ordinary athletes to
extraordinary competitors.
Ashley is a triathlete based in Indiana. She’s been training
and competing in triathlons since January 2015. Ashley
was powerlifting at that time, following a carb and
protein-heavy diet “to move mass.” She gained 42 pounds
once she started the diet and says she was embarrassed
because she could no longer fit into any of her clothes. She
then quit powerlifting and set her sights on a triathlon, but
never followed through and registered. That’s when her
wife, Bre, gave her a little push
and signed her up for a triathlon
without her knowledge.
“I literally taught myself how to
swim and printed off an online
training program,” says Ashley.
“About a month and a half in,
I started losing some weight
by being very careful with my
nutrition and with the help
of ProBiotic Restore ULTRA,
Spark ® , O 2
Gold ® and Catalyst .”
In one year, she’s completed
three triathlons and lost
47 pounds. She trains eight to
15 hours a week: twice a week
she rides her bike for an hour
or more and transitions straight into a three to six-mile
run. The other five days she goes between bike-to-run
sessions or swim-to-run sessions that involve swimming
two miles at a time. By eating more protein, complex
carbohydrates and vegetables, Ashley uses food to help
rebuild muscles and fuel her body while training.
“I’m smaller than I was in college when I was playing
soccer full time,” admits Ashley. “My recovery time is
much shorter with the help of Post-Workout Recovery,
Nighttime Recovery and AdvoCare Core . * I feel like I can
still live my life no matter how hard my training regimen is.”
Although Alberto shares this passion for high-intensity
activities, his story and how he got here are very
different. He first tried Spark ® at a Mixer (a small group
meeting) in September 2011 and was surprised that it
kept him awake throughout the presentation. * He rarely
worked out, hated running and constantly indulged on
fast food and pots of coffee. He knew he was in a rut and
needed a change.
After successfully losing weight during his first
24-Day Challenge ® , Alberto decided to stick with
AdvoCare products because he loved the way he felt. He
was going through a divorce
and wanted something to
focus on to get him through, so
he continued to make healthier
choices, like cutting out greasy
cheeseburgers and reducing
his alcohol intake, to change
his lifestyle.
Seven months into his new
routine, Alberto decided to
give running another chance.
“I bought new shoes and ran
three miles my first run —
I never ran more than two
miles before,” says Alberto.
“I ran my first 5k in May 2012,
a 10k in June, a half marathon in
December 2012 and a full marathon in June 2013. My
first ultra marathon was in June 2014, which is 37 miles.”
Once Alberto discovered his passion for running, he
never looked back. He’s lost a total of 30 pounds in
the process, and gained muscle in the past three years.
He also lifts weights on a weekly basis and does 100
burpees a day to help maintain muscle mass. For cardioheavy
workouts, Alberto mixes Arginine Extreme and
Spark ® , and says he won’t leave home without O 2
Gold ®
for endurance-based activity. *
Now he has his sights set on one of the longest and
hardest races in the world, the Western States 100
in California.
