The Wood River boy’s basketball
team is coming off a difficult
2016-17 season, which saw the
Eagles go 2-18.
But a new campaign brings a
fresh start for Wood River and
second year head coach Joel
Stryker.
Seven returning letterwinners
will be back on the court this
season, including junior Tanner
Hermann, who posted 9.8 points
and 4.5 rebounds per game from
the guard position last year.
Senior Cade Ludwig, who
averaged 6.8 points and 4.6
rebounds per contest, and
sophomore Ty Swanson will also
play vital roles for the Eagles.
Senior Jimmy Rojas, junior Jose
Trejo, and junior Grant Gannon
will also see plenty of court time
for Wood River.
“The keys to this season for us is
our commitment to the defensive
end. Our defensive numbers
have to improve,” Stryker said.
“As the kids enter their second
year in a new system, I expect
our guys to push tempo knowing
what they can and can’t do in our
offense. The biggest key for us
is playing at a high intensity and
attack everything.”
Wood River will open the season
on Nov. 30 against Sandy Creek.

Coming off an 11-11 season that
featured positive growth for the
Wood River girl’s basketball
squad, the Eagles will look
to keep moving in the right
direction in 2017-18.
Under the direction of Phillip
Smith, who owns a 28-41 record
at the helm of the program,
Wood River will return eight
letterwinners to the court, as
well as a core of seniors.
Three seniors are due back
on the roster, as Elle Luehr,
MaKenzie Peters, and Kiley
Codner will all take leadership
roles come the start of the
season.
A few younger athletes will
also look to make an impact,
including juniors Ainsley
Stewart, Cydnee Huxtable, and
Joci Rauert.
“Ball control, limiting
turnovers while playing fast
and having our speed turn into
turnovers on defense (are the
keys to success),” Smith said.
“Teamwork, blending of all
ages, pushing for a common
goal, and not an individual goal.
Keep improving on knowledge
of the game, and development of
young guards will also be key.”
The season will start for Wood
River on Nov. 21 against
Lexington.
