The Wilber-Clatonia boy’s
basketball team will be looking
to bounce back after a 6-16
campaign in 2016-17.
However, that goal will have
to be accomplished with some
young talent, as the Wolverines
return only five letterwinners and
two seniors under head coach
Lucas Albrecht.
“We have to gain some
confidence in the early portion of
our schedule before Christmas,”
Albrecht said. “Our inexperience
will be tested as some of our
younger kids will be forced into
greater roles.”
Two starters do return for the
Wolverines, as Hunter Cerveny,
who averaged 5.6 points a game
last season, and Josh Kalkwarf,
who posted 3.2 points a contest,
will both be back in uniform.
“Both will need to take a jump
in production and leadership,”
Albrecht said.
Coltin Rezabek, Preston Lee, and
Colten Johnson will also look to
carve out significant roles once
the season gets underway.
“We do have some size inside but
not much varsity experience,”
Albrecht added. “We hope to get
some confidence in December
and go from there.”
The season will get underway
for Wilber-Clatonia on Nov. 30
against Tri County.
The Wilber-Clatonia girl’s
basketball squad will have a lot
to prove in Class C-1 this season,
as the Wolverines return only one
letterwinner to the court.
The Wolverines are coming off
an 8-14 campaign which ended
with an overtime loss to Fairbury
in sub-districts.
Jenny Wagner will be back again
to lead the Wolverines from the
sidelines, but the experienced
head coach will have to find a
way to win with a very youthful
squad.
Wilber-Clatonia returns only one
senior, guard Kory Moldenhauer,
who will look to be a leader for
the Wolverines this season.
Junior Rylee Hayek will also play
a big role, as will sophomores
Tia Kreshel, Megan Tinsley, and
Aislim Martinez.
“We are a very young team with
little varsity experience after
losing six seniors last season,”
Wagner said. “Our young players
will have to step up and grow as
the season progresses in order to
continue to see success. We have
a great future ahead of us.”
Wilber-Clatonia will open the
season on Nov. 30 against Tri
County.
