KEARNEY SENIOR HIGHBOYS
The 2016-17 campaign was an
impressive one for the Kearney
boy’s basketball squad.
The Bearcats went 22-5 before
falling to Papillion-La Vista in
the second round of the NSAA
state tournament.
The season was highlighted by
a dominant 19-game winning
streak that led the Bearcats to
the end of the regular season and
through districts.
Under head coach Drake
Beranek, who owns a 38-13
record as a Bearcat, Kearney will
be looking for more of the same
in 2017-18.
The team will be led by senior
guard Kanon Koster, who is
coming off a solid junior season.
Also looking to contribute will
be juniors Shiloh Robinson
and Carson Schwarz, as well as
senior forward Sam Straka.
But for Beranek, the success of
his team will hinder on whether
the Bearcats are content with last
year’s run, or are motivated to
push even farther.
“We were fortunate to play in
some great environments and
enjoy some amazing experiences
last season,” Beranek said.
“Having some success can either
make you hungry for more
or satisfied. We are excited to
see if our program is ready to
consistently compete at a high
level.”

The Kearney girl’s basketball
squad will have a lot of
momentum heading into
the 2017-18 campaign, after
finishing 17-9 and making
an NSAA state tournament
appearance last season.
Under tenured head coach
Jason Boyd, who owns a 170-
106 career record as a Bearcat,
nine letterwinners return, as
the group will look to make
another run in Class A.
Leading the charge for
Kearney will be junior Alexis
Mishou, who posted 9.5
points and 4 rebounds during
her sophomore campaign.
Also playing a key role will
be senior guard Avery Wood,
who averaged 3.1 points,
1.8 steals, and 2 rebounds a
contest last year.
Sophomore guard Adison
Wood, and juniors Claire
Vanderbeek and Elle Dahlgren
will likely carve out significant
playing time as well.
“The Bearcats return nine
letterwinners from the
team that went to the state
tournament last season and
finished with a 17-9 record,”
Boyd said. “We hope to build
on that success as several of
these returners will take on
larger roles this season.”
The season will get underway
for Kearney on Nov. 30 at
home against Papillion-La
Vista South.
