HUMBOLDT-TABLE ROCK-STEINAUERBOYS
SOUTHERNBOYS
Coming off a 9-14 campaign,
the key word for the Humboldt-
Table Rock-Steinauer boy’s
basketball squad this season will
be leadership.
It all starts with head coach Taylor
Dunekacke, who will be entering
his first year at the helm of the
program.
In addition, with only four
letterwinners returning, leadership
roles will have to be filled by
athletes on the Titans squad if
the group plans on making some
noise come early December.
“We will need someone to step
up and take a leadership role,”
Dunekacke said. “We will have a
lot of guys playing varsity for the
first time.”
HTRS will rely heavily on junior
guard Hunter Hain Jr, who posted
7.9 points and 3.1 rebounds a
game last season.
In addition, senior forward Hunter
Sherman, who averaged 6.2 points
and 6.4 rebounds as a junior, and
Connor Bredemeier Jr. will look
to play keys roles.
“If these guys can adjust quickly,
we can be successful,” Dunekacke
added. “We will need to improve
our defense and limit our
turnovers.”
The season tips off for the Titans
on Dec. 1 against Diller-Odell.
The Southern boy’s basketball
team showed growth during the
2016-17 campaign, finishing
the year with a 13-12 record
after starting 3-6.
Under head coach Zack
Emerson, the Raiders will look
to continue building momentum
within the program in 2017-18,
but will have to do so with a
fairly young squad.
Only two seniors, guard Dalton
Traunericht and forward Trevin
Saathoff, will return to the
hardcourt this season.
This means Southern will have
to rely on a pair of juniors,
Drake Adams and Nick Lyons,
to shoulder some of the load.
In addition, sophomores Nic
Zito and Braden Klover will
have to step into bigger roles
once the season gets underway.
When asked what the keys to a
successful season are, Emerson
laid out his recipe for success.
“Building off of last year’s
success, younger players taking
the next step, and leadership,”
Emerson said.
SOUTHERNGIRLS
The 2016-17 season didn’t
produce much in the way of
wins for the Humboldt-Table
Rock-Steinauer girl’s basketball
squad, as the Titans finished the
campaign 4-18.
However, last year did provide
a young team some valuable
experience, which is a benefit for
first-year head coach Trent Platt.
If HTRS hopes to make some
noise in Class C-2 this season,
a group of seniors will have to
contribute.
Platt will be looking toward
Amber Blank, Rebecca Watson,
Camille Svoboda, and Bre
Reyes to provide some veteran
leadership for the Titans this
season.
Juniors Bella Vasco and Matilyn
Stalder, as well as sophomore
Carissa Allen, will play key roles
as well.
“The key to our success is
going to be how good the girls
want to be,” Platt said. “We
had a great summer, playing
almost 30 games. We have our
top scorers back that can shoot
from everywhere. Defense and
rebounding is always important
for success, and we have the girls
to do that.”
The Titans open the season on
Dec. 1 against Diller-Odell.
TEAM FACTS
Team Name: Titans
Class: C-2
2016-17 Record: 4-18
Head Coach: Trent Platt
Career Record: 4-18
Fresh off an 11-13 season, the
Southern girl’s basketball team
will look to continue taking steps
in the right direction in Class C-2
this year.
The Raiders will be led by head
coach Jeff Murphy, and will
have eight letterwinners and one
senior returning to the court in
2017-18.
Leading that group will be junior
forward Maria Murphy, who
averaged 9 points and 4 rebounds
a contest as a sophomore.
Junior guard Jayme Ullman will
also be a player to watch after
posting 4 points and 3 rebounds a
game, while racking up a total of
31 steals last season.
Fellow junior Shelbe Rainey, and
sophomores Claire Hookstra,
Allee Jo Wieden, and Kambree
Singleton will also look to play
significant roles for the Raiders
this year.
“We will need to score in
transition and push the tempo
as we are not great scorers from
the outside,” Murphy said.
“Utilizing post play will be a
key factor. Pressure defense to
keep the score down will also be
something we must do. We have
depth and we hope to use that to
our advantage.”
The season will get underway on
Dec. 1 against Palmyra.
