Coming off a season in which the
McCool Junction boy’s basketball
squad went 8-15, the Mustangs
will have to rely heavily on youth
in 2017-18.
Only four letterwinners return
for head coach Jarred Weiss, who
enters his third season at the helm
of McCool Junction.
Weiss will lean on senior forward
Kellan Green, who averaged 6.2
points and 7.1 rebounds a game
last year.
In addition, junior guard Dallas
Briney, who posted 1.4 points a
game in 2016-17, will look to step
into a bigger role.
Weiss also identified Owen
McDonald, Giovanni Riga, and
Kaden Kirkpatrick as a group of
newcomers who could carve out
significant roles this season.
“We will rely on several
newcomers this season,” Weiss
said. “How they pick up on
everything will determine our
season. We will not be overly big,
however we should be able to get
up and down the floor fairly well.”
McCool Junction will open the
season on Nov. 30 against Cross
County.

For head coach Dade McDonald,
the 2017-18 season for the
McCool Junction girl’s basketball
squad will likely come down to
one aspect of the game.
“We need to establish
consistency on both ends of the
floor,” McDonald said.
The Mustangs are coming off a
10-12 season, which saw McCool
Junction win 10 of its last 18
games following a four-game
losing streak to start the year.
A number of key players will be
back on the court at the start of
the campaign, including junior
forward Hadley Wiemer, who
averaged 9 points and 6 rebounds
a game last season.
Junior forward Jillian Stark
will also be returning after
contributing 8 rebounds and 8
points per contest last year, and
senior guard Ciera Wilkinson
will play a major role in the
backcourt.
The experience those three
players provide could help
McCool Junction find the
consistency that is needed to be
successful.
“We must defend well to create
easy scoring opportunities
and limit our own turnovers,”
McDonald added. “Many of our
juniors and seniors have played
substantial varsity minutes the
last 2-3 years, so we will rely
heavily on that experience.”
