DONIPHAN-TRUMBULLBOYS
Coming off a season in which
the Doniphan-Trumbull boy’s
basketball squad posted the
second best record in school
history, expectations are high
heading into the new campaign.
Led by third-year head coach
Kelan Buhr, the Cardinals will
return nine letterwinners from
last year’s team, including three
starters. Senior Logan Schuldt
will look to carry the bulk of the
load after averaging 12.2 points,
5.7 assists, and 2.4 steals a game
as a junior.
Senior Bret Jonson, a three-year
starter who posted 10.7 points
a game last year, and junior
Triston Stephens will also be key
contributors for the Cardinals this
season.
“We return a great deal of
experience and depth at the guard
position. We will feature some
new faces in the post and once
again look to play an exciting, uptempo
style of basketball,” Buhr
said. “However, our defensive
mentality and ability to rebound
the basketball will dictate how
truly good this team can be.”
The Cardinals open the season on
Dec. 1 on the road against Blue
Hill.

The Doniphan-Trumbull girl’s
basketball squad is coming off
an 8-14 season, and although
the record doesn’t stand out,
valuable experience was gained
both on the sidelines and on the
court.
The Cardinals now enter year
two under head coach Jeff
Keasling, who spent the 2016-
17 season getting his bearings at
the head of the program.
With six returning letterwinners
due back this year, Doniphan-
Trumbull will look to keep
progressing and make some
noise in Class C-2.
A player to watch for the
Cardinals is sophomore guard
Katie Roach, who posted
9 points and 4 assists as a
freshman.
Senior Zoe Ballard, as well
as junior Bailey Williams will
need to play significant roles for
Keasling this season.
Logan Poppe, Kalee Wiltfong,
and Tristan Larsen will also see
a lot of minutes in 2017-18.
“We are a smaller team both in
size and numbers. It is important
for us to be extremely sound
and disciplined defensively,”
Keasling said. “Last season
eight of our 14 losses were by
single digits, with three of them
coming at the buzzer. We have
to figure out how to close those
50/50 games out.”
The season will get underway
for the Cardinals on Dec. 1
against Blue Hill.
