HAPPY
‘London is a safe global
city – none of us should
unfairly put our great
capital city down.’
Met Commissioner
Cressida Dick.
This year the Sheriff’s Award was
presented to PC Wayne Marques a
British Transport Police officer. The
room was silent as the submission
was read out. This young man was
confronted by three knife-wielding
terrorists during The London Bridge
Attacks, suffering severe, lifechanging
injuries. On the evening
of Saturday, June 3, after hearing
the screams of a woman outside the
railway station. PC Marques headed
towards the terrifying scenes which
became known as the London Bridge
Attacks. Passers-by tended to a man
suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Amid scenes of panic and confusion
along Borough High Street, PC
Marques, without thought for his own
safety, charged the three attackers to
stop more being injured. With only
A near doubling of the maximum litter
fine, £80 to £150 from April, has been
welcomed by a security contractor.
Terror teaching for schools
Police last month made terrorism
safety advice available to teach in
UK schools. ‘Run, Hide, Tell – The
story of Nur, Edih and Llet’ is an
animated film aimed at 11 to 16-yearolds
(key stage three and four in
schools). It tells the story of three
young people caught up in a terror
attack on a shopping centre, and can
Assistants in
residence
At the University of
Greenwich halls of
residence, as on any campus,
out of hours issues can cause
the most safety and security
anxiety. Hence Greenwich
set up Resident Assistants (RAs),
drawn from students, to give not
only pastoral care for fellow students
but a first response, to mediate in
lower level anti-social behaviour.
The chosen service delivery partner
a standard issue expandable baton to
defend himself, he engaged all three
attackers who turned on him fiercely
brandishing eight- and ten-inch knives
and were dressed in what were later
found to be fake explosive vests.
Fought
Despite the desperate danger, PC
Marques fought courageously
and relentlessly, until he lost
consciousness. He suffered severe
injuries inflicted by stab wounds to
his head, hands, hip, legs and was
rendered temporarily blind in one eye.
PC Marques had been a probationary
officer who had been working for
less than two years with the British
Transport Police at that time. PC
Marques demonstrated a remarkable
such fines on the owners of vehicles
that litter is thrown from, even if
someone else threw it. Environment
minister Thérèse Coffey said:
“Littering blights our communities,
spoils our countryside and taxpayers’
money is wasted cleaning it up.
Throwing rubbish from a vehicle is
just as unacceptable as dropping it
in the street and we will tackle this
antisocial behaviour by hitting litter
louts in the pocket.” p
health and economic education)
lesson plans. At the National Police
Chiefs Council, Lead for Protective
Security, Met Police Deputy Assistant
Commissioner Lucy D’Orsi said:
“These lessons will go way beyond
the basic messaging we have
delivered through previous publicfacing
campaigns.” p
Accommodation Services
at Greenwich, says: “The
RAs have become our
‘eyes and ears’ and are able
to confidently deal with a
variety of issues that, in
the past, would have meant
the call out of a full member of staff.”
degree of bravery and an outstanding
level of selflessness. The actions he
took whilst seriously endangering
his own life led to the terrorists
being shot dead by armed police and
unquestionably prevented others from
being injured or killed. The 2017
award could not have been bestowed
upon a worthier recipient. As part of
this award, PC Marques will receive
a cheque for £2500 and his name will
be inscribed on an honours board and
placed in a book of honour, both on
permanent display within the Central
Criminal Court (The Old Bailey).
After the outline of his endeavours
the room erupted and everyone stood
for an ovation after hearing about his
outstanding bravery. After the dinner
I was able to catch up with him and
congratulate him; it was an honour. p
Travel trends
The perception of risk to travelling
business people remains elevated,
according to the Ipsos MORI
Global Business Resilience Trends
Watch, now in its second year. The
survey found that travel plans were
changed, mainly due to concerns
over security threats (58pc), next by
natural disasters (43pc). A majority,
63pc of business decision-makers
perceive travel risks to have increased
in the past year. Rob Walker at
International SOS and Control Risks,
said: “The immediate obvious risks,
such as the recent hurricanes and
unforeseeable security incidents,
will see organisations scrutinised in
terms of preventative measures and
recovery.” A typical response is to
send travellers pre-trip and during trip
emails. See also over the page. p
Code for vulnerable
New from BSI (British Standards)
is PAS 17271, a code of practice for
banks to protect vulnerable customers
from fraud, or financial abuse, defined
as the criminal act of controlling a
person’s property, money, pension
book or other valuables. David Lowe,
Head of Fraud Prevention at NatWest,
the PAS sponsors, said: “Being victim
of fraud can be devastating and
sadly we are seeing the complexity
and sophistication of these crimes
increase. We know that it is our
collective responsibility to support
consumers.” p
