Photos by Roy Cooper 70 It may be just a coincidence that Chinese food happens to be a favourite of Professional Security’s Managing Director Roy Cooper, but both our recent editor’s luncheons have taken place within a private dining area of the Hutong restaurant on the 33rd floor of The Shard. Good weather on both occasions meant the stunning panoramic view of London from so high up provided an opportunity for the security consultants, consulting engineers and representatives from the transport sector who attended one of the luncheons, to point out the various buildings or infrastructure projects they were involved in. Who was there The luncheons presented an excellent opportunity for the business development team at Hanwha Techwin, the video surveillance manufacturer who sponsored both events, to join in with the lively discussions between some project managers and consultants who are quietly getting on with providing their expertise to ensure projects ranging from small office buildings, through to major shopping centres and mission-critical utilities, are designed, implemented and commissioned on time, within budget and meet clients’ expectations.. The Turing Test Both lunches had a lively debate as to whether a machine, (and by that we mean a fully integrated electronic security solution), could ever replace DECEMBER 2017 PROFESSIONAL SECURITY Food for thought a control room operator. With people with engineering backgrounds present, it was suggested that for at least the next ten years at least, it was unlikely that an integrated solution, even if it took advantage of the latest advances in detection, video surveillance, face recognition and behaviour analytics solutions, would be likely to pass the Turing Test. Alan Turing was the exceedingly clever guy who worked for the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park and during World War Two he devised a number of techniques for speeding up the breaking of German ciphers. The test which he developed in 1950 was intended to compare a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour equivalent to a human. It was acknowledged that over the next few years artificial intelligence, deep learning, operational technology (OT), with massive, affordable computing power and the Internet of Things (IoT), will deliver progress in solutions which up until now have been unimaginable. However, a high degree of human involvement was still likely to be needed to apply ‘emotional intelligence’ which in real-time takes advantage of a control room operator or security officer’s past experiences and gut feel for what may be happening. Procedures and protocols should always be developed for potential scenarios, but dealing with a dynamically developing incident or emergency involving injury or potential loss of life, cannot just be a process. It needs a human emotional response. The US Air Force was mentioned as an extreme example where this thinking is applied. Despite all the extensive resources available and even though aircraft can now be programmed to automatically take off, land and cope with changing circumstances, airmen are still required to sit in full uniform at a remote air force control room in order to ‘fly’ drones. In respect of a fully integrated electronic security system, it could certainly be configured to provide accurate detection of any suspicious activity but experienced personnel would still be needed to make operational decisions. Putting aside the political issues which come with driver-only operated (DOO) trains, only time will tell if cameras can safely and effectively replace guards. There was a general consensus that the largest area of risk to passenger safety is on platforms and that the latest high definition cameras had a significant part to play in enabling station personnel to react quickly to any incident. Education There was discussion that end-users might not be taking advantage of many advanced features such as video analytics which come as standard or can be run on the open platform cameras. Editor’s Luncheon continued ... from page 70 closely than ever with distribution partners to ensure installers were aware of how the latest generation cameras were capable of doing so much more than just capturing quality images. Analytics The general consensus was video analytics is able to make a significant contribution to surveillance systems when deployed for health & safety and security purposes or to identify opportunities to improve productivity. There was concern raised that there have been instances of cameras paired with one of a myriad of specialist analytics solutions available on the market, without expert pre or post sales support to ensure endusers can take full advantage of the combined solution. Chris Parry believes manufacturers need to take more responsibility and start being selective with technology partners to achieve a deep level of integration. Consultants, system designers and integrators are offered peace of mind with the knowledge that the specialist applications have been extensively evaluated and tested before they are approved to be supplied with selected cameras as out-of-box solutions.
