Polyfest
Cook Islands Group
It has been a very
competitive year for the
Mangere College Cook
Islands Group 2016. We
competed against other
schools all around Auckland
and were placed 3rd Overall.
Although it wasn’t the result we
wanted, we were pleased we
made it this far and our group
gave an awesome performance.
I have seen a lot of effort put
into our performance since our
first practice. Everyone was really
keen when learning the items and
knowing the meaning behind each
item. Every time we practised we
learned new things and got to
know each other more and more
which was really interesting to see.
This year we had one of the best
performances I have experienced
throughout my school years. We
also had some non-Cook Islanders
who proudly represented our
culture on the day of Polyfest
and this was really special for the
group.
As a leader of the group, I am
proud to say that everyone nailed
it on the day. Our performance
was seen as one of the best
out of all of the schools in the
competition. I am so proud of
the dancers who managed to
put up with all the troubles and
all the growlings they received
from myself and the tutors. Also
a huge thank you to all our tutors
who took the time out of their
busy lives to come and help us
with our performance this year.
It wouldn’t have been possible if
it wasn’t for them. I am happy to
say that we are one of the most
fortunate groups to have tutors
like Mr & Mrs Tai Temanu, Mrs
Moe Temanu, Mama Kura Taruia,
Teniva Samuel, Geeva Maroroa,
Tiree Haworth and also our other
supporters who came along and
helped as well. We are grateful
for everything they have done
throughout the time of Polyfest.
So much happened during the
Polyfest season. After a couple of
days of practice, everyone became
so close which was really good.
There were times when everyone
shared tears, laughter and joy, but
then again that’s how it’s supposed
to be. We face challenges but as a
whole and we overcome them.
