Gen X Unleashed 2016
This year our school
participated in a unique
competition that unites
four art forms into one:
Music, Multimedia,
Spoken Word and Dance.
Gen-X is unique as it differs
from your usual hip-hop dance
competitions. Participants
from secondary schools across
Auckland battle it out to spread
this year’s theme of hope and
to express their ideas and views
on hope - what it means to us
and how hope has motivated us.
The purpose of Gen-X is for the
youth of this generation to bring
a solution to the main struggles
of our society and our community
through creativity. The purpose
is to make the audience see the
vision and become a part of the
movement ‘to unleash the next
generation of world-changers
through creativity’.
The leaders, Ana, Melania and Lily,
faced a lot of challenges since they
had never experienced an event
like Gen-X before.
Gen-X requires a lot more thought
26 Mangere College - 2016
and meaning in our performances
unlike other dance competitions.
'Participants
of hope, to
After our group had their input
into the meaning of hope, we
decided on three main problems
that our society faces: Domestic
Violence, Bullying, and Depression.
In our piece, we told the story
through our main dancer, Cherish,
who portrayed these problems
through contemporary dance.
We tried to create a solution to
this, to show victims that they
aren't alone.
The outcome of this was being
placed 3rd out of 9 Schools. It
was an interesting opportunity to
witness the hard work our fellow
students put in, and to see the
hard work come into fruition. As a
participant of Gen-X, the journey
from the first day of practice
until the day of performing was
extremely hard. Despite the many
struggles we encountered, it was
all worth it in the end, as the
experience created a family bond
among the crew. It was a privilege
to be a part of something with
such meaning and to be called a
world changer.
