AUTOBIOGRAPHY CONTINUED...
corridors with her head down. I
thought school was such a waste
of time and I only enjoyed Art and
lunch times. I never really knew
the importance of school. Looking
back at those years fascinates
me. I always think about how I’ve
changed since then. Now, I have
grown into a young adult who is
mature and able to make my own
decisions, who doesn’t mind taking
selfies, meeting new people, or
letting my hair down every now
and then. A lot of people have
noticed how I’ve changed too.
They complement me about how
I’ve opened up more. I’m happy
now, I’m not letting my insecurities
hold me back from taking
opportunities. Like the dance
competition called GenX I’ve joined
this year and I know I wouldn’t
have done that 3 or 4 years ago.
Even though school still isn’t my
favourite place, I’ve realised the
importance of being educated,
hence coming to school every day.
I have my mind set on where I
want to go in the future, which is
studying architecture or interior
design at university.
Throughout the years I’ve
Roni Moeroa Akama - 10WD
come across a few people I’ve
befriended that weren’t a great
influence on me and people
who have brought out the best
in me. When I started college, I
surrounded myself with people
who were ‘tough’. They were
troublemakers. I thought being
friends with them would make
me cool. Now that I look back, it
disgusts me just thinking about it.
I’m disappointed with my younger
self for ever thinking that fitting in
was important. But who doesn’t
think about that when they first
start college. At least I know who
to avoid now. I feel like my current
close friendships are something
I will cherish and value for a long
time. They motivate me and
encourage me during hardships.
They bring out my weird side and
I can literally tell them anything
without being judged. They
wish the best for me as I do for
them. My friendship with them is
something that has really shaped
me into the person I’m meant to
be and I’m very thankful for them.
K-pop is something I hold dear to
my heart, or just Korean music
in general. I think Korean music
has contributed a lot to who I’ve
changed into. Before I listened
to K-pop, music didn’t really
have much effect on me. I still
enjoy the genres of music that I
previously listened to a lot, but
K-pop is like going to into a whole
new world and I love it. It has
brought extreme happiness (and
sometimes sadness, but mainly
happiness) to my life. I don’t even
remember the last time I cried
myself to sleep.
Discovering K-pop could possibly
be one of the best discoveries in
my life. I’ve never wanted to learn
a new language so much, not only
Korean but Chinese, French and
more. Learning about cultures has
become more interesting. Going
to South Korea is now number
one on my bucket list. I’ve met
many people and made new
friendships through this music. I
was someone who couldn’t find
inspiration or motivation, but now
'I have a huge
passion for
anything to
do with the
art industry,
and I’m also
a huge K-pop
fan girl.'
I have. Korean idols inspire and
motivate me. They go through so
much hardship, endless schedules
including practices, interviews,
concerts, fan-meets and much
more. They have to endure all of
that with little sleep. Seeing them
work so hard makes me think,
‘if they can endure all that, then
I can at least wake up and go to
school and gain credits’. One of
my favourite idols said 'Always
put school first, get qualified then
meet me happily. K-pop will always
be here.' I probably wouldn’t be
doing much work if it weren’t for
them. Never have I ever thought
that I would get sucked into the
K-pop life but I did and I don’t
regret it.
Since walking through those gates
for the first time, I’ve noticed
that my attitude has changed
and progressed as I’ve matured.
I was embarrassed by myself
and how I looked, but I’ve slowly
progressed and accepted who I
am. Through my friends and after
discovering K-pop, I’ve become
happier. Hopefully, in the future I
will grow even more as a person
and analyse how I’ve changed
since writing this. I’m excited about
what my future may bring and I
am ready to graduate as a Year
13 from Mangere College. The
outside world is waiting for me.
