Tongan Group<br />
The Mangere College Tongan<br />
group 2016 worked very<br />
hard to retain their winning<br />
streak in both Ma’ulu’ulu<br />
and Soke.<br />
However, this was only achieved<br />
by a unified membership that<br />
ranges from Y9 to Y13 as well as<br />
the support from our awesome<br />
parents in the process. The<br />
Tongan group consisted of 70<br />
engaged students. Many had been<br />
part of the group last year which<br />
was a bonus for the group in<br />
making reconnections.<br />
The 2016 Mangere College Tongan<br />
Group male leaders were Viliami<br />
‘Ahio (12SA) and his assistant,<br />
Sione Vea’ila (12DV). Although<br />
they were Year 12, both of them<br />
stepped up and demonstrated<br />
great leadership skills. The female<br />
leaders were ‘Ana Taulanga (13TF)<br />
and her assistant, Kaleni Palu<br />
(13TF). They worked well together<br />
to encourage and reinforce our<br />
Mangere College values of respect<br />
and responsibility by walking<br />
alongside the teachers, parents<br />
and students, listening and being<br />
sensitive. All four Tongan group<br />
leaders showed kindness and<br />
caring, which in turn kindled<br />
likeminded behaviour within the<br />
group.<br />
This year the Tongan group<br />
experienced aroha, hope, unity<br />
and acceptance. These qualities<br />
enabled them to participate in a<br />
positive manner in the practices.<br />
Tongan parents were able to work<br />
alongside the teachers too. A big<br />
malo aupito goes to the 2016<br />
Tongan group Teacher- in-Charge<br />
Mr T. Lotulelei and assistant<br />
Ms F. Bloomfield who worked<br />
tirelessly and took on most of the<br />
responsibility for most Tongan<br />
group practices. Parents and<br />
students appreciated the presence<br />
and assurance from trusted<br />
experienced Tongan Teachers and<br />
staff at each practice. Thank you to<br />
Mr V. Bloomfield, Mr I. Tafea, Mr V.<br />
Tupou, Ms F. McIntosh and Ms A.<br />
Tatafu.<br />
We were honoured and grateful to<br />
work again with the dynamic duo<br />
Punake (Tutors) Mr Paane Alofi<br />
and Vili, as well as their families<br />
who assisted in the drumming<br />
and teaching the dances. Both<br />
Punake worked positively and<br />
equipped the students with<br />
knowledge of the Tongan culture<br />
through traditional dance.<br />
Students and their parents alike<br />
thoroughly enjoyed the practices,<br />
indicating just how important<br />
communication is both in Tongan<br />
and English which allowed<br />
everyone to ‘sing from the same<br />
song sheet’.<br />
Unifying and strengthening<br />
relationships within the 2016<br />
Mangere College Tongan group<br />
between students, teachers and<br />
our Tongan families was a key<br />
ingredient for another successful<br />
result for the Mangere College<br />
Tongan group.<br />

STAGE RESULTS<br />
1. 1st Place in the Ma’ulu’ulu which was highly contested with 22 schools this year competing in<br />
this group dance.<br />
2. 1st place in the Soke which involved 6 schools.<br />
