Tongan Group
The Mangere College Tongan
group 2016 worked very
hard to retain their winning
streak in both Ma’ulu’ulu
and Soke.
However, this was only achieved
by a unified membership that
ranges from Y9 to Y13 as well as
the support from our awesome
parents in the process. The
Tongan group consisted of 70
engaged students. Many had been
part of the group last year which
was a bonus for the group in
making reconnections.
The 2016 Mangere College Tongan
Group male leaders were Viliami
‘Ahio (12SA) and his assistant,
Sione Vea’ila (12DV). Although
they were Year 12, both of them
stepped up and demonstrated
great leadership skills. The female
leaders were ‘Ana Taulanga (13TF)
and her assistant, Kaleni Palu
(13TF). They worked well together
to encourage and reinforce our
Mangere College values of respect
and responsibility by walking
alongside the teachers, parents
and students, listening and being
sensitive. All four Tongan group
leaders showed kindness and
caring, which in turn kindled
likeminded behaviour within the
group.
This year the Tongan group
experienced aroha, hope, unity
and acceptance. These qualities
enabled them to participate in a
positive manner in the practices.
Tongan parents were able to work
alongside the teachers too. A big
malo aupito goes to the 2016
Tongan group Teacher- in-Charge
Mr T. Lotulelei and assistant
Ms F. Bloomfield who worked
tirelessly and took on most of the
responsibility for most Tongan
group practices. Parents and
students appreciated the presence
and assurance from trusted
experienced Tongan Teachers and
staff at each practice. Thank you to
Mr V. Bloomfield, Mr I. Tafea, Mr V.
Tupou, Ms F. McIntosh and Ms A.
Tatafu.
We were honoured and grateful to
work again with the dynamic duo
Punake (Tutors) Mr Paane Alofi
and Vili, as well as their families
who assisted in the drumming
and teaching the dances. Both
Punake worked positively and
equipped the students with
knowledge of the Tongan culture
through traditional dance.
Students and their parents alike
thoroughly enjoyed the practices,
indicating just how important
communication is both in Tongan
and English which allowed
everyone to ‘sing from the same
song sheet’.
Unifying and strengthening
relationships within the 2016
Mangere College Tongan group
between students, teachers and
our Tongan families was a key
ingredient for another successful
result for the Mangere College
Tongan group.
