Gardening
Group
The Gardening Group
works in the school
garden every Wednesday
after school.
They are helped and guided
by Metua Aerenga (community
volunteer) and Rosalie Kwan. The
vegetables that are grown are
either donated to organisations,
taken home by the students or
sold to staff. Any funds raised
are then used to buy new seeds,
plants and equipment for the
garden.
What the students say about the
garden:
“It’s really interesting to learn
about growing vegetables.” Chu
Moo 9FI
“I like working in the garden
because it is so green and I like
eating the vegetables we grow.”
Madina 9FI
“I like digging and doing heavy
work in the garden.” Zabiullah 9FI
“I like helping and seeing the
vegetables grow.” Suega 11DH
“I like to learn about plants and
planting.” AJ 12BF
Ms R. Kwan says that seeing
the students learning about
the garden then taking this
knowledge home and starting
their own gardens at home is very
rewarding.
Metua has recently been selected
as a finalist in the 2016 GARDENA
Gardener of the Year competition
run by the New Zealand Gardener
magazine. He loves growing
plants and teaching the students
how to garden.
'...students
learning
about the
garden then
taking this
knowledge
home...
is very
rewarding.'
