The Principal's Report
• Our U85kg League team
who won the Auckland
Championship for the third
year in a row.
So the school is in a very strong
position to move forward in
the next few years and we are
looking to continually improve
what we do for all our students
and ensure that all students have
the opportunity to achieve. We
have been through three years
of significant improvements in
NCEA results and the existing
staff together with new teachers
coming in are well placed to
take advantage of the new
opportunities that are available.
As I come to the end of
my first year at Mangere
College I would like to
make some reflections on
the year and what I have
seen around the school.
I am constantly amazed by the
strong inclusive environment
that exists in the school. This
is a school where students are
comfortable in themselves and
their culture, a school with a
strong sense of community and
where respectful relationships
are the norm. These things are
clear to see each day at Mangere
College and are what make it such
a privilege to teach here. Last
year the Education Review Office
commented on this inclusive
environment when they said:
'Students have a sense of identity
and belonging in this school.” and
“Mangere College students are
proud of their language, culture
and identity.'
The school’s academic success has
also been recognised this year in a
letter from the Honourable Hekia
4 Mangere College - 2016
Parata, Minister of Education,
congratulating us on our
improvements in NCEA results. In
this letter she says:
'The results being achieved by
Mangere College clearly show the
positive impact that great teachers
and great schools can have on the
achievement of their students.'
Academic achievement is the most
important thing in a school but it
is not the only thing and Mangere
College wouldn’t be the school
it is without our co-curricular
programme. There have been
many other highlights this year
including:
• Our unprecedented success
at Polyfest including our
Samoan Group winning the
co-ed competition, our Tongan
Group winning their two
performances and the Cook
Islands Group coming third on
their stage.
• Our Premier Girls' Volleyball
team winning the Auckland
Championship and coming
third at the National
Championships.
I take immense pride in coming
to work and being associated
with Mangere College. Whenever
I speak to principal colleagues or
others in the teaching profession
they are not surprised to hear
how much I enjoy my work as the
school has a very good reputation
in the education community.
We can all be very proud of this
school and the success we have
had in the past. There is a lot of
work still to be done to ensure
that we are doing the best for all
our students but we are focussed
on this work and there is a clear
direction forward.
'The results
being achieved
by Mangere
College clearly
show the positive
impact that great
teachers and
great schools
can have on the
achievement of
their students.'
