The Star
Capture spring colour
• By Rachel Vogan
AS PARTS of the garden
leap into life, the heros in
my blooming world at the
moment are daffodils, tulips,
hyacinths and jonquils.
I would love to lead you to
believe that this is all through
careful planning and skill
that I have such a plethora
from which to choose, but
that’s not quite true.
The majority of bulbs I am
enjoying now were planted
by the previous owner. She
was a lady who would beaver
away in the garden from dawn
to dusk, constantly digging
In the vase
Team up these spring
beauties with strong,
bold foliage to fill out
the vase. Go-to ones
are bear’s breeches
(Acanthus mollis),
upright outdoor ferns,
variegated flax varieties
or some strong stems
of colourful willow
branches – even red
stems of dogwood.
Stems of camellias
blend in beautifully as
well, while branches of
berries,
like holly, add another
textural layer.
plants up and moving them
to another place in the garden
to enhance a vista or view.
And now, as I get to sit back
and reap what she sowed, I think
of her often. Yes, I have added my
twinkle to a few areas by planting
a few hundred bulbs, but the bulk
of what I am picking now have
been in situ for 20 years or more.
Did you know that daffodils
can last out of water for up
to eight hours before they
start to wilt and fade?
Even though I have known
this for years it always seems
mean to make them suffer, so I
place them in a bucket of fresh
water filled up to their necks.
Tulips, hyacinths and daffodil all
flower at the same time. If you
do not have room in the garden,
try them in pots.
Here we see a bunch of daffodil colours and varieties. The trick to keeping them alive once
picked is to change the water every few days and cut the bottom of the stems at the same time.
They can last up to a fortnight in a cooler room.
Add some bite to salads
RED SORREL is a, flavoursome, wonderful salad green
and vegetable.
The bright green leaves with contrasting dark maroon
stems and veins add colour and taste to salad mix or micro
mix blends.
It has the same sharp, tangy flavor as regular sorrel.
This red rascal adds flavour and depth to salads dishes,
in sandwiches or even as a pizza topping to give an
interesting combination of flavour.
Used either on its own with balsamic and parmesan,
or blended with other leafy greens, it’s a must for any
vegetable garden.
Red sorrel must surely be related to the common French
sorrel which can quickly become weed-like.
When, where and how to plant
Sow seeds in spring in trays or directly into the garden.
This plant does readily seed, so once you plant it you
will never need to buy seed again.
It prefers a moist well-worked soil in full sun. It is hardy
to frost, snow and wind.
