section in Mt Pleasant and am
in the early stages of planning
our new home. However, I am
one of the unfortunate ones still
working through earthquake
insurance issues. As the current
sitting councillor, I have done
a considerable amount of work
in this area over the last three
years. I have an intimate understanding
of all the local issues.”
Peter Laloli:
Lives in
Riccarton,
running for
Halswell
“Halswell’s a new
ward and it’s got rapid growth.
I’ve been on the community
board the last 15 years and I
think the ward needs someone
with experience. That had a part
in it [going up against Vicki
Buck in Riccarton]. She was
going to be hard to challenge –
there was an opportunity out in
Halswell and I’ve been representing
that area for 15 years.”
Mike Davidson:
Lives in Central,
running for
Papanui
“I did not move from
the Papanui Ward,
the ward moved from me due to
the representation review. My
decision to stand as a independent
candidate in Papanui was
because of the work I have done
in this ward as the chairman of
the community board and the
over 20 years I have spent living
locally. This is the ward I know,
have represented and want to keep
working in.”
Rod S Cameron:
Lives in Cashmere,
running for
Harewood
“I don’t think I
naturally fit in anywhere,
I’m currently living in St
Martins, but I own a property in
St Albans. I looked at the future of
the city and thought what does it
need? I spoke to a couple of current
councillors I know quite well
and they asked if I would consider
Harewood. I looked at what
Harewood meant for the city and
it included the airport, which I’m
quite passionate about.”

“Most areas of the
new Harewood Ward used to be
part of the Fendalton-Waimairi
Ward, which I have represented as
a community board member for
the last 12 years. With the boundary
changes, my earthquakedamaged
house in Merivale falls
outside the new Harewood Ward.
However, the rebuild of it which
has just been completed, would
provide me opportunities for
relocating within the new ward’s
boundaries.”
Tane Apanui: Lives
in Coastal, running
for Hornby
“I grew up in Hornby, I
spent my teenage years
there, played my sport
there and started off my working
life there. My experience is in infrastructure
and transport. Hornby
is the gateway of the south-west,
so I’ve got more to offer there than
in the suburb I am living, which is
South New Brighton.”
Rod D Cameron:
Lives in
Cashmere,
running for
Harewood
“Well the
Harewood Ward is new and
there’s no current councillor
that’s standing, so the voters
need a bit of experience, and I’ve
had two previous terms on the
Hagley-Ferrymead Community
Board. I did my research and in
Cashmere people were pretty
happy with Tim Scandrett so I
didn’t want to foul in his patch.
I used to live in Harewood and
people I knew asked me to
stand there. Why would I want
to stand against Tim when I
had people screaming for me to
stand in Harewood?”
Raf Manji: Lives

Waimairi
“I chose Waimairi
because I have
been closely involved in the
District Plan issues in that area.
I am not a fan of the new ward
system for councillors but that’s
what we have for now.”
Phil Clearwater:
Lives in

Spreydon
“My roots have
always been in the Spreydon
area where I raised my family,
established strong connections
with local community groups
and I still attend my church in
Addington. I now live in lower
Cashmere, just over 1km from
the Spreydon Ward boundary
and have represented Spreydon
residents on the Spreydon-
Heathcote Community Board
loyally for over 20 years.”
Anthony Rimell:
Lives in Central,
running for
Waimairi
“I’m standing in
Waimairi because
that’s where I grew up, got married
and first had my family. It’s
an area I’ve had a life long association
with. We moved away
when we bought our first home,
which was in an area more affordable
at the time. I could have
chosen to stand elsewhere, but
this is an area I love, and really
want to represent.”
