GETAWAY TO WESTCOAST
The Star
Spend another day
WESTPORT was founded as a port for the
export of coal from the clouds in the late 1870s.
You can follow its history at the Coaltown
Museum/I-Site before descending on Denniston
itself, to understand the harsh life of the coal
miner. Nowadays Westport is known for its
adventure activities, like Jet Boating the Buller
River, Underworld Adventures at Charleston,
The Denniston Experience and Outwest Tours
into the Awakari Valley, awesome scenery, local
arts and excellent dining options. Thirty minutes
north to Granity you’ll find art and craft studios
and an award winning Café overlooking the sea.
Twenty minutes’ drive to the South of Westport
is Tauranga Bay/Cape Foulwind, where a walking
track leads to the Seal Colony and onto the Able
Tasman Astrolabe, commemorating the great sea
captain’s first sighting of New Zealand. Carters
Beach, the only sheltered sandy beach on the
West Coast suitable for swimming, is just south
of Westport and offers a range of accommodation
and a Cafe overlooking the beach. Biking and
walking is the best way to experience the West
Coast with the Old Ghost Road, Heaphy Track,
Oparara Basin, Charming creek, Denniston
Plateau, Tiropahi Tram Track and the Kawatiri/
Rotary Millennium walk, all within a day’s
outing.
So pack your bags and spend
another day at our place “We will
be pleased to show you around”
to observe the magnificent White Heron
(Kotuku) in their natural nesting environment.
The Royal Spoonbill and the Little Shag also
share this special area and all can easily be seen
from the hide. The White Heron only use this
area for breeding so can be seen in the reserve
over the spring and summer months, usually
mid-September until early March. Over the
autumn and winter months they disperse widely
throughout New Zealand and are generally seen
as a single solitary bird. The population of
White Heron in New Zealand is approximately
200. To see one of these splendid birds is a rare
and special sight and to visit their only breeding
ground is a truly unique experience.
‘White Heron Sanctuary Tours’ is the original
and only tour to visit the White Heron nesting
site. Tours operate with a Department of
Conservation concession and entry is by permit
only. Friendly experienced guides with local
knowledge. Don’t miss this exceptional tour.
