YOU SERIOUSLY have to
wonder what’s going on between
the Government and the city
council.
Last week we revealed the
Department of Prime Minister
and Cabinet refused to release a
report to the city council on the
anchor projects, on the basis of
commercial sensitivity.
It was a clear snub to the city
council wanting to get a better
insight into what lies ahead for it,
and ratepayers cost-wise, when
they inherit the running of big
ticket items like the Convention
Centre and sports stadium.
A week on, the city council
still hasn’t got the report, but The
Star has, courtesy of Wigram
MP Megan Woods who accessed
it via the Official Information
Act.
DPMC director Kelvan Smith
confirmed yesterday that the
report still hasn’t gone to the
council. He has changed his tune
from a week ago when he said
it was because of commercial
sensitivity. Now he says the
report is outdated.
For the big projects to progress
the city council is going to have
to start fighting back.
SEEING DOUBLE
Harewood residents will have to
look at their ballot forms closely,
with two Rodney Camerons
running in the ward. Rodney S
Cameron and Rodney D Cameron
are two of five candidates vying
for a seat around the city council
table in October. Both are concerned
voters may get confused
about who is who and vote for the
opponent. There will be no photos
of the forms, just their names, and
middle initials, so voters will need
to remember who is who.
THIS WEEK IN CANTERBURY’S PAST
On September 11, 1928, Charles Kingsford-Smith and his
crew, made up of Charles Ulm, Arthur Litchfield and Thomas
McWilliams, landed at Wigram in Southern Cross after the first
transtasman flight. A crowd of 30,000, who were alerted by all-night
radio broadcasts, gathered at the airfield to see it arrive.
PART-TIME MUSTERER
City councillor Jamie Gough had
an unfamiliar task on his hands
on Monday – herding sheep over
the city’s oldest timber bridge.
The Helmores Lane Bridge was
reopened for the first time since
the February 2011 earthquake,
after five months of repairs. It
was originally used to drive
stock towards the Riccarton sale
yards. So as part of it re-opening,
Cr Gough drove the sheep over
the bridge as a part of a reenactment.
