wonder what’s going on between<br />

the Government and the city<br />

council.<br />

Last week we revealed the<br />

Department of Prime Minister<br />

and Cabinet refused to release a<br />

report to the city council on the<br />

anchor projects, on the basis of<br />

commercial sensitivity.<br />

It was a clear snub to the city<br />

council wanting to get a better<br />

insight into what lies ahead for it,<br />

and ratepayers cost-wise, when<br />

they inherit the running of big<br />

ticket items like the Convention<br />

Centre and sports stadium.<br />

A week on, the city council<br />

still hasn’t got the report, but <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>Star</strong> has, courtesy of Wigram<br />

MP Megan Woods who accessed<br />

it via the Official Information<br />

Act.<br />

DPMC director Kelvan Smith<br />

confirmed yesterday that the<br />

report still hasn’t gone to the<br />

council. He has changed his tune<br />

from a week ago when he said<br />

it was because of commercial<br />

sensitivity. Now he says the<br />

report is outdated.<br />

For the big projects to progress<br />

the city council is going to have<br />

to start fighting back.<br />

THIS WEEK IN CANTERBURY’S PAST<br />

On <strong>September</strong> 11, 1928, Charles Kingsford-Smith and his<br />

crew, made up of Charles Ulm, Arthur Litchfield and Thomas<br />

McWilliams, landed at Wigram in Southern Cross after the first<br />

transtasman flight. A crowd of 30,000, who were alerted by all-night<br />

radio broadcasts, gathered at the airfield to see it arrive.<br />

City councillor Jamie Gough had<br />

an unfamiliar task on his hands<br />

on Monday – herding sheep over<br />

the city’s oldest timber bridge.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Helmores Lane Bridge was<br />

reopened for the first time since<br />

the February 2011 earthquake,<br />

after five months of repairs. It<br />

was originally used to drive<br />

stock towards the Riccarton sale<br />

yards. So as part of it re-opening,<br />

Cr Gough drove the sheep over<br />

the bridge as a part of a reenactment.<br />
