On Tuesday, the Hagley- Ferrymead Community Board approved a watered-down version of the city council’s plan to transform the street into an “inner-city destination area”. However, a petition organised by climate change group, Generation Zero, calling for the original plan to be implemented, has gained more than 720 signatures. In May, the city council announced plans to transform the street as part of its Accessible City chapter of the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan to make it pedestrian friendly. It involved closing the street to vehicles, with the exception of buses and bicycles, from Christchurch Casino to the clock tower, and removing 50 car parks. Shop owners in the area opposed the plan because they said it would kill their business. After public consultation, the city council proposed the watered-down version, which would see vehicle access retained, and only 31 car parks removed. The plan is scheduled to be discussed at the Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Committee meeting next Thursday. It would then make a recommendation to the city council. Generation Zero representatives would speak at the committee meeting and present their petition. Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board chairwoman Sara Templeton said the board had a “long, robust” discussion before recommending the new plan. However, she said there were concerns the opportunity to make a pedestrian-friendly street could be lost. Robbery arrests after armed police swoop • By Andrew King TWO 18-YEAR-OLDS have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery of a dairy on Monday. Properties on Butterfield Ave, Linwood, and Barton Ave, Woolston, were targeted by police yesterday. They were looking for the suspects who robbed the Kirk Rd Dairy, Templeton, with a pistol and metal bar at about noon. Reuben Banks, of Linwood, was arrested and appeared in court yesterday charged with aggravated robbery. He was remanded in custody without plea until September 22. Another man arrested at a different address will appear today also charged with aggravated robbery. Three disguised offenders entered the dairy. One “manhandled” the employee from behind the counter while the other two targeted cash and cigarettes. Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Ford confirmed the search warrants were in relation to the Kirk Rd armed robbery. He said reports of shots being fired during the Linwood warrant were false, but a diversion device was used when entering the address in Butterfield Ave. A witness, who did not want to be named, said the Armed Offenders Squad used what looked like a “flash-bang” grenade before entering the property. The Kirk Rd Dairy is just the latest in a long line of armed robberies to plague the city in recent months. On August 29, a man entered the Curletts Rd Dairy brandishing a hatchet and demanding money and cigarettes around 1pm. It is alleged the same offender then robbed the Campus Corner Dairy on Ilam Rd at about 3pm with the same hatchet. On August 25, three men, one armed with a pistol, entered the Kendal Food Centre. Two of the men took the owner into a back room and punched him, while the third took cigarettes and searched for cash. On August 15, two bars were targeted by masked men. The Embankment Tavern on Ferry Rd and O’Sheas Public House on Marshland Rd were robbed by offenders with a firearm. They fled empty handed from the Embankment but allegedly stole more than $20,000 from O’Sheas. On August 9, three balaclavaclad men entered 24/7 Buns Bakery, Waltham, armed with a rifle, a hammer and a bat. One man threatened staff with the rifle while another with a hammer tried to open the till.
