We will remember this winter as the one that broke many of the cold temperature records. It's been a true Canadian winter but, like our Canadian culture, we look for the positives and we embrace the highlights and joys that come our way and the brilliant sunshine during this winter was one of those joys. It has been spectacular as long as we were behind glass!! Now we have February - the month that warms our hearts and softens our world with traditional love songs, boxes of delicious chocolates and funny Valentine cards. Send one anonymously - it will make you smile and be a 'treasure' for the receiver. We know that these soothe our souls during the long bleak days of winter. When we feel good after enjoying some 'chocolate delight', it's easier to believe Spring is just around the corner. A big "Welcome Back and Shout Out" to Tracy Benson who is returning to the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre as of Jan 9. Tracy has been working at the West End Centre and we are thrilled to have her back supporting the GWSA Seniors. Board Highlights: 1. ALERT: this is for all GWSA Members and Volunteers. Please write in your calendars that the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre will be CLOSED to everyone from JULY 2 to AUGUST 7. The City will be repaving the parking lot and replacing the sidewalks, so plan your staycation or your getaway vacation for this block of time because the building is closed and Elvis has left. Activity Group Leaders will receive a new revised contract from Tracy Benson formalizing the closure of the Centre. 2. In the January Sentinel, we had an article regarding the information session the GWSA sponsored to hear Heather Flaherty, City of Guelph General Manager Parks and Recreation, outline the City's plan for the proposed South End Recreation Centre. Our next step was to form a GWSA SERC committee to draft a wish list for the needs and wants for Seniors at the new SERC. This committee met on Jan. 2 and drafted the list. It covered transportation, parking, gym time, access to the pools, fitness, ice pads and a multi-purpose room. We covered safety issues, change rooms, Boardroom and storage. The report was presented to the GWSA Exec and Board of Directors for approval and met Heather's due date for submission to the City beginning the week of January 22. Even though the report has been sent, we were told because of the (Continued on page 35) NOTE: Disclaimer—The Sentinel and the GWSA do not necessarily agree with or support statements in the Sentinel made by advertisers, or submissions by writers.
