The Heart & Stroke Foundation have invested more than $1.45 billion in vital heart and stroke research, making us the largest contributor in Canada after the federal government. This investment has contributed to the Canadian cardiovascular and cerebrovascular community’s position as a leader in the international research arena. Over the past 60 years, with the Foundation’s help, the death rate from heart disease and stroke has declined by more than 75 per cent, with nearly 40 per cent of this decrease occurring in the past decade. Today, more than 90 per cent of Canadians who have a heart attack and more than 80 per cent who have a stroke, and make it to hospital, will survive. Heart disease and stroke are the leading cause of hospitalization and the second and third leading causes of death in Canada. More than 66,000 Canadians died in 2012 from heart disease or stroke. That’s one person every 7 minutes. Up to 70,000 heart attacks, 62,000 strokes and 40,000 cardiac arrests occur each year in Canada. Last year, the Foundation helped create 165,000 more survivors. With your support we can do even better. Every donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation supports investment in life-saving research, advocacy, health promotions and education programs. It’s all aimed at reducing the impact of heart disease and stroke, and helping Canadians live longer, fuller lives. CSS Spring Education Series: Planning for the popular CSS education series is underway and we will be announcing our line-up in mid-February. Watch for flyers, mail-outs and check the GWSA website for details. Sessions will be hosted at the Evergreen Centre between April 9 and May 29. Free Food Demonstration: Always interesting and always delicious — come learn about nutritious food ideas and enjoy some free samples of seasonal food. Provided with the support of Dietitians with the Guelph Family Health Team, this event will be held on Wednesday, February 7th (10:00 a.m. - noon) in Room 2. Registration required. Please call Pat Gage at 519-837-5696 to reserve your spot. - Become a Heart Month Canvasser - Organize your own Fundraiser - Participate in the Co-operators Heart & Stroke Curl for Heart - Register a team for the Heart & Stroke Big Bike Diabetes Support Group All are welcome to join the Diabetes Support Group which meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday mornings of the month from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. in Room 2. This group is supported by CSS Dietitian Molly Roberts and is an excellent way to share information and management strategies with other seniors. A $2.00 donation helps support this great program.
