Crouch Valley U3A 

Monthly Meeting 

Our meeting for February will take place on Tuesday 27th, 

in the Multi-Purpose Room at Champions Manor Hall, 

Hullbridge Road. 2pm 

Crouch Valley U3A is based in South Woodham Ferrers and 

exists to provide a range of interesting and challenging 

activities for retired and semi-retired people in our town. 

Our meetings are friendly and informal and are normally 

held on the afternoon of the fourth Tuesday of each 

month. 

If you have made a new year’s resolution to do something 

different or get out and enjoy yourself. Meet new people 

and keep active, then the U3A are the best place to start. 

Why not give us a visit. We may have just what you are 

looking for. 

Visitors to our meetings are made very welcome and we 

are also happy to welcome new members into our U3A. 

We have over 18 thriving interest groups and any of these 

can be joined by contacting the relevant Group Contact at 

a meeting. We welcome suggestions for new groups from 

our members and if you have a special interest not catered 

for by our existing groups we would be delighted to offer 

the opportunity and help needed to set up a group within 

our organization.

Chelmsford Museum, Oaklands Park, Moulsham Street, Chelmsford. 

Friday Fives offers parents and little ones a chance to sing, share a story 

together, get crafty and explore some of Chelmsford Museum’s 

fascinating objects. The Friday Five Sessions has been running at 

Chelmsford Museums for nearly 10 years. The Festive Friday Fives event 

will have a special ‘Christmas is coming’ theme that is bound to get 

children, parents and carers well and truly in the Christmas spirit.

The Town Council’s Christmas buffet lunch for some of the town’s senior 

citizens was recently held at Champions Manor Hall Community Centre. 

Funding was provided by the Town Council for the entertainment from 

the singer Tracey Cogger and the buffet lunch from The Eatery. A number

with the serving of tea and

Can you Give This Dog A Home? 

Wagtails Rescue Essex are a dog rescue home which is 

unfortunately closing due to owners Ill health and have one dog 

left, Lola, to Home. She has been in foster for at least 2 years and 

the fosterers situation has changed and Wagtails are getting 

desperate to home her now and don’t want to resort to kennels 

as she wouldn’t cope. 

Lola is a 7 year old staff X Springer, who desperately needs a 

home as our rescue is closing. Lola needs a pet free home, she is 

good with kids but not to be homed with young ones, as she 

may knock them over in her playful moments! Lola does get on 

with most other dogs for a stop and sniff, but can sometimes 

take a dislike where she will growl. Therefore, an experienced 

owner used to this is what we are looking for. 

Lola needs an owner who is home most of the time as she likes 

company although she can be left for 2-4 hours once she had 

settled down. 

In return, you will get a very 

loving, loyal girl who will cover 

you in kisses and loves to 

cuddle up on the sofa. 

It is urgent that we get Lola 

rehomed as she is our last dog 

now. Her fosterer can tell you 

everything there is to know 

about her, so you will have her 

support if need be.

Chillies Help Raise money for J’s Hospice 

Another really fantastic evening took place recently at Chilli’s Restaurant 

to raise money for The J’s Hospice. Cllr Patricia Hughes and Cllr Linda 

Denston organised the evening with Kamrul Hussein, the Manager of 

Chilli’s. By popular demand, a Bangladeshi menu was agreed including a 

dessert. 

Chilli’s very generously donated 20% of the food takings on the night, 

including all the take-away meals. A special thank you to the staff who 

also donated £60 We are so thrilled to announce that £842.32p was made 

in total including proceeds from the raffle. Thank you to all who 

attended to make the evening so successful and to Kam and his staff for 

the wonderful service and friendly atmosphere! 

We look forward to arranging another evening at Chilli’s in either June 

or July. 

LAUNCH OF CHAT 

(Chat 2 Help All Teenagers ) 

On the 28th February a Private Facebook group will go 

live for teens aged 13 to 19 years old to 'chat' amongst 

themselves about anything. It will be monitored by adult 

volunteers who all have CRB/DBS and training. At the 

moment, this group is for teens in the Chelmsford 

Borough, and is fully supported by the Centre Supporting 

Voluntary Action http://chelmsfordcvs.org.uk/ 

Local resident, Jean Hasler has, over the last 3 month been 

working on setting up an the unincorporated association 

which she hopes to one day become a registered charity 

has been the instigator in setting up this organisation and 

is still working hard in trying to make it a registered 

Charity. 

To start this organisation off, Jean has started her first 

fundraiser of cutting her hair off to raise money for CHAT. 

Jean said, “my hair has been down to my waist since my 

youth ( I am 35yrs now) and I am having around 12 - 15 

inches taken off and then donating the hair to The Little 

Princess Trust. This is happening on the 24th February, at 

Scarletts Hair Design in Bicknacre.

NEW DEVELOPMENT IN SWF. There were several comments in last 

week’s edition about the proposals for more houses for the town. 

Irrespective of which side of the debate you favour, let me remind you 

of the atrocious way that Essex County Council has treated South 

Woodham from its inception in terms of healthcare provision. I’ll return 

to the subject in due course but, if the new development is given the go 

ahead, it must be accompanied by an expansion in Healthcare facilities 

which can allow for a reasonable standard of healthcare for all those 

living in the town. For all its merits, as things stand, it doesn’t look as 

if the ‘new build’ will have the capacity to absorb a sizeable influx of 

new residents.

MEASLES IS BACK: Public Health England (PHE) says: There have 

been 51 confirmed measles cases in the West Midlands where there is 

still an ongoing outbreak. The measles outbreaks previously reported in 

other parts of the country are now under control and case numbers are 

declining. However, measles cases continue to be confirmed across 

England with 36 cases reported to date in 2018. 

FOCUS ON HEALTH 

There was a good programme on Radio 4 at the weekend which dealt 

with the damage done by this charlatan. Even though he’s been 

pilloried by the scientific community and struck off the medical register 

he still manages to influence a surprisingly large number of parents. 

David Salisbury, who was in charge of the vaccination programme here 

at the time the Wakefield story broke, talked at length about the 

problems he faced in trying to counteract the anti-vaccine propaganda. 

I found when I was doing regular radio broadcasts that there was an 

idea that interviews had to be ‘balanced’. I usually tried to stand aside 

when there was an important vaccination story and instead attempted 

to find an expert such as the brilliant Sally Millership who could 

provide chapter and verse. The trouble with this was that local radio 

had the idea that to ‘balance’ this you had to have someone who took 

the opposite view … so whereas in the red corner you had the expert 

who spoke eloquently on the subject, in the blue corner you’d have 

someone from an organisation called something like: “Why Your 

Doctor Wants To Kill You.” In the battle between science and 

pseudoscience, the former often came off worse. 

Dr Mary Ramsay, Head of Immunisation at PHE, said: “The measles 

outbreaks we are currently seeing in England are linked to ongoing large 

outbreaks in Europe. People who have recently travelled, or are 

planning to travel to Romania, Italy and Germany and have not had 2 

doses of the MMR vaccine are particularly at risk. This serves as an 

important reminder for parents to take up the offer of MMR vaccination 

for their children at 1 year of age and as a pre-school booster at 3 years 

and 4 months of age. Children and young adults who missed out on 

their MMR vaccine in the past or are unsure if they had 2 doses should 

contact their GP practice to catch-up. We’d also encourage people to 

ensure they are up to date with their MMR vaccine before travelling to 

countries with ongoing measles outbreaks.” 

Sarah Boseley wityes in The Guardian: “Measles cases have soared 

across Europe over the last year, with large outbreaks affecting one in 

four countries, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) 

which is concerned by low rates of immunisation against the disease. 

WHO Europe says there has been a 400% increase during 2017, with 

more than 21,000 cases and 35 deaths. That will be a major 

disappointment following the record low in 2016, when there were just 

5,273 cases in Europe.” 

“Every new person affected by measles in Europe reminds us that 

unvaccinated children and adults, regardless of where they live, remain 

at risk of catching the disease and spreading it to others who may not 

be able to get vaccinated,” said Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO regional 

director for Europe. “Over 20,000 cases of measles, and 35 lives lost in 

2017 alone, are a tragedy we simply cannot accept.” 

Sarah B reminds us that: “Measles can kill or cause long-term damage. 

One in every thousand children affected develops encephalitis, which 

is swelling of the brain and can lead to deafness or learning difficulties.” 

One big problem has been that that the public think of measles as ‘just 

a rash’ and the fact that the vaccine is safe and effective is not always 

appreciated by those on the receiving end. Sarah B says: “Confidence 

in the MMR – measles, mumps and rubella – vaccine and in 

immunisation generally has been an issue in Europe and in the United 

States following the discredited claims of the researcher Andrew 

Wakefield, who linked the MMR to the development of autism.”

Anecdotal ‘evidence’ always goes down well on radio and TV. For 

example Trump was once put up against a leading expert on 

vaccinations – he was talking to the American people about his doubts 

about the safety of the MMR vaccine. He wiped the floor with the 

expert. The reason was that, although this opponent set out his case 

well, Trump responded with the story of one of his female employees 

whose child was vaccinated with a ‘quart-sized syringe with a pump on 

it’ which, he said, resulted in the child becoming autistic. The expert 

was out for the count – the lasting impression was that of a tiny baby 

and an enormous syringe. 

David Salisbury said he’d experienced exactly the same problem in his 

dealings with the media – but that this was less of a problem now than 

it was on his day as the broadcasters have woken up to the fact that 

they have the ability to do great harm by irresponsibly ‘balancing’ 

interviews in this way given that ‘scientific’ explanations of complex 

subjects are often difficult to grasp

who eat Jemima’s eggs have been heavily criticised by the pro-life 

organisations who believe in the sanctity of life even in its un-hatched 

stage. And feminists are up in arms about the portrayal of Jemima as a 

stereotypically ‘daffy duck’ rather than one who is intelligent, 

resourceful, and courageous - bravely standing up for the rights of 

fellow ducks who wish to exercise their right to hatch their own eggs.

Purleigh and District Gardening Club. 

The Spring bulbs are now pushing their heads above the ground 

and gardeners are starting to think about getting out into the 

garden again. As I write this it is still very cold – only a couple of 

degrees above freezing all day today - but the garden is 

beginning to demand attention and after a winter break I will, 

before very long, have to steel myself to get out and tend to 

some of my plants. 

Purleigh and District Gardening Club has also had a winter break. 

Our last meeting in November 2017 was our AGM, Autumn Show 

and Social evening and was a huge success. The hall was full of 

members and full of Autumn colour from all the magnificent 

exhibits that our members had found in their gardens. Margot 

and Peter Bishop very kindly judged the show for us. The Clark 

Lewis Cup for the best chrysanthemum was awarded to Lindsey 

Bain and Dennis Wakefield achieved the most points over the 

year in the monthly flower competition. 

During the AGM we were told about the continued success of 

the club and of the Purleigh Flower Show. The committee was 

duly re-elected, with the exception of Chris Shaw, who has 

decided the time has come to take a well -earned break from the 

Flower Show Committee. Chris has been a stalwart member of 

the Committee and has taken a significant role at The Flower 

Show for a number of years. We will miss her subtle humour at 

our meetings and would like to thank her for all that she has 

done for the Flower Show and the club. 

During the evening we were entertained by a garden themed 

quiz which had been put together by John Challis and we then 

had a wonderful supper which had been provided by our 

members. 

Our first meeting of 2018 will be held on Monday March 19th at 

7.30pm in Purleigh Village Hall. It promises to be a most 

interesting evening. Margot Bishop, who has been a Gardening 

Banners posters and flyers all out

in your diaries now!! 

We are a very friendly club with members coming from all over 

the district. Our meetings are varied and have something in each 

of them to interest everybody. We share seeds and plants and 

lots of tips about gardening so even if you are an inexperienced 

gardener you should find the meetings helpful. Although we 

have flower shows and monthly competitions there is no need to 

exhibit if that is not your ‘thing’. We always welcome all new 

members and if you prefer to try us out before joining or if there 

is one particular evening that interests you more than others you 

are very welcome to attend as a visitor. Our membership fees are 

very reasonable – just £7.00 for 8 meetings – and that includes 

tea or coffee and biscuits!! We charge just £2.00 for a visitor. 

Definitely a bargain!!

Essex Youth Offending Service 

help the homeless and show 

why it’s Cool to be Kind 

Young people working with Essex Youth Offending Service (YOS) 

have been supporting Chelmsford-based rucksack project, Cool to be 

Kind, with its efforts to keep homeless people warm and dry this 

winter. 

Over the past six weeks the young people, who are carrying out 

reparation work with the YOS, have collected, sorted and prepared 

items donated by the public, including warm clothes, sleeping bags 

and non-perishable food. 

The group packed a total of 177 complete rucksacks ready to be 

delivered to people living on the streets in Essex and beyond. 

Dan from the Cool to be Kind project said: “On behalf of myself and 

the team, I would like to thank everyone from Essex Youth Offending 

Service for their tremendous effort in galvanising young people and 

members of the community, and donating so many full rucksacks. 

“The rucksacks are full of essential items that will benefit a homeless 

person during these cold months and have been distributed, not only 

in towns across Essex, but also in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. 

“These donations also make up just over 50% of the total rucksacks 

donated to the project this winter and I hope we can replicate these 

efforts again next winter. “ 

Karen Sinclair, Referral Order Co-ordinator for Essex YOS and Essex 

County Council lead for the rucksack project, said: “Our collaboration 

with Cool to be Kind has been such an astounding success and we 

have been amazed at the generosity of the local community and 

everyone involved. 

“We are very proud to have helped the team with the work they do 

to support homeless people, and happy to have been able to give 

our young people the chance to contribute to this important 

project.” 

Essex YOS work with many young people aged 10-18 who carry out 

‘reparation’ as part of their court order. 

The service ensures all its reparation work with young people is 

restorative and involves giving back to the local community, 

including charities, not-for-profit agencies and those who are most 

vulnerable in our society. 

Councillor Dick Madden, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for 

Children and Families, said: “I’m really proud of the efforts of our 

Youth Offending Service and the young people that work with them. 

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in supporting the Cool to be 

Kind project, including our local communities for the generosity 

they’ve shown.” 

The YOS is always looking to contribute to projects to help

SWF Rotary Club Contributes to Boys 

Brigade Swimming Gala 

Martin Holden attended the busy presentation meeting of the Rotary 

Club to receive a cheque to contribute towards the Boys Brigade 

swimming gala to be held at the South Woodham Ferrer’s Swimming 

pool Saturday 3rd February. We would not be able to support either 

the youth or other good causes without the support we receive from 

the community for our events such as the Sleigh and the Swimarathon.

services for the town are most welcome to join us. There is a 15

Further to your request for parking restrictions in King Edwards 

Road. Your request has been considered by the South Essex 

Parking Partnership (SEPP) and I regret to inform you that it has 

been declined, at this time, for the following reasons. 

• A period of monitoring did not show a concentrated parking 

problem along King Edwards Road. Site visits were carried out 

during the day and in the evening and there was little 

difference in the number of vehicles parked on the toad; and 

there was ample on-street parking still available. Additionally, 

on one early morning site visit 8 of the 14 parked vehicles had 

frosted windows. 

• There are no reported traffic collisions in King Edwards Road in 

the last three years. 

• Any consideration to prohibit parking may lead to speeding 

issues and parked vehicles act as a natural traffic calming 

measure. Indeed, with the removal of the speed cushions along 

King Edwards Road it is recommended that retaining some 

parking is desirable. 

• It is likely there would be objections from some residents who 

may have insufficient off-street parking provision to a proposal 

to prohibit parking.

IN RESPONSE TO SWAG'S P PRICE 

I didn't plan to respond to my recent letter, but seeing as P Price (of 

SWAG) decided to challenge my views I felt compelled to do so. 

In my letter I pointed out the definition of a NIMBY. There was no insult 

intended and I simply looked up the term on Google. 

P Price's response to my letter defines ignorance and is simply full of 

passion led opinion, not fact. I therefore refer again to the definition, 

which states ''Generally, many NIMBY objections are guessed or feared'', 

this is because it spreads fear into people, why, I do not know. 

So, just to clarify a few facts I feel the need to answer the narrative of P 

Price's letter: 

They state that I did not attend the recent council meeting. I may well 

have done so an ignorant assumption is being made there. My partner 

and I have taken a 

keen interest in this new local plan, thanks to SWAG. We had no hope for 

a future here until the current proposals were published. 

They state that Chelmsford Council have committed to just 179 

affordable homes across the whole of Chelmsford. This is simply not true. 

At the recent exhibition 

at the village hall I read we are getting 35% across the Chelmsford area. 

If we get 1000 homes that will be 350, in Woodham alone! 

They state that children are going to run across the road from the new 

development, as opposed to using the planned 'safe crossing areas'. Why 

on earth are children 

going to start doing that? How many children are currently doing that 

in the town??? 

Forgive me if I'm wrong but our children are sensible, intelligent people, 

so here we have yet another ignorant insult aimed towards the younger 

people in the town. I know, 

I was one, and still see myself as relatively youthful. 

One accident is one too many but how would SWAG stop children 

crossing the road. Maybe install eight foot tall fences to keep the 

children in touch! 

So, P Price has kindly assisted me in confirming what I stated in my 

previous letter, so thank you for that. 

These people are not the future of our town and they clearly intend to 

spread fear into those who do not want change. 

I would not seek to insult our local people with such stories and hope 

that SWAG apologies for doing so.

After last week’s game being called off, the Lions were keen to get going 

today against their close rivals. 

Sam P and Tom were unavailable this weekend, so Will jumped into the 

Squad, along with Morgan, making an extremely welcome return from 

injury. 

The first half saw both teams cancel each other out with great defensive 

showings at each end. Neither team really looked like breaking the 

deadlock, much to the frustration of the travelling fans. 

The second half saw Writtle take their chances better, leading to two 

well deserved goals from the home team. 

For the second time this season, the Lions had to dig deep with losing this 

‘six-pointer’ never an option. 

Step up Captain Ed with fantastic goal from a well taken corner. This 

lifted the Lions with the game now coming alive. 

Following a nasty injury to Michael, Dan W stepped into right wing 

duties, immediately making a difference, netting the Lions second goal 

as a reward. Joe put the icing on the cake, netting the winner. 

Writtle never gave up and this game proved our toughest so far this 

season. 

The boys finished out on their feet with everyone giving all they had. 

Not the best performance but a fantastic well earned three points today.

SWF RFC in U14 league game 

SWF U14 19 v 52 Harlow U14 

This weekend Woodham hosted Harlow in the 4th round of the U14’s 

Waterfall Cup. The weather was sunny and warm but the pitch was 

showing signs of the rain from earlier in the week. The visitors called 

the toss but lost and the hosts elected to receive. The scene was set for 

a great afternoons rugby. 

Rochford drove hard into the Woodham half following the ball from the 

off. Woodham made ground but a succession of good tackles and strong 

rucking pushed the Woodham team back. Harlow seemed well drilled at 

the ruck and this would become Woodham’s Achilles heel during the 

game. Rochford were the first to cross after a break and scored directly 

under the posts to give an easy conversion 0 – 7. 

Woodham pressed the visitors and the home sides scrum was firing on all 

cylinders this weekend, winning every ball no matter who put in. 

However, the Harlow defence proved to be impenetrable as Woodham 

struggled to enter the Harlow 22. Again the visitors would turn 

Woodham over, and with quick hands in the back line getting the ball 

out to their fast runners, they were soon crossing the Woodham try line 

taking the score to 0 – 12, with the conversion missed. 

Much of the same ensued for the remainder of the first half and the 

visitors cross twice more with both conversions good before the half time 

whistle and the score 0 – 26. 

However, Woodham were not done, and came out firing in the second 

half. Great work again by the Woodham pack winning ball to spread 

out to the backs to let their legs run only to be hit by a great defence 

from Harlow. Woodham pushed Harlow inch by inch and from a lineout 

crossed the Harlow line through Jodie. The conversion missed taking the 

score to 5 – 26. 

Harlow turned the screw on Woodham and were soon showing their 

strength again at the breakdown, pushing Woodham off almost every 

ruck. They scored again on the right hand side after a great chase down 

by Ethan, tackling the Harlow player on the line but unable to stop him 

rolling over to touch down. The conversion missed the score now 5 – 31. 

Some ill-discipline from Harlow saw them pinged back 10 at a penalty, 

but they managed to turn over the ball and attack the Woodham line 

again, with 2 more tries both converted 5 – 45. 

Woodham again dug deep and attacked the Harlow line. Winning the 

ruck, the ball popped up to Stig who thundering through 3 covering 

tackles broke through to dive over the line for his first of the season. 

The conversion was good and Woodham were pushing for more, with 

the score now 12 – 45. Again the Woodham boys countered from the off 

and driving forward broke clear of the Harlow defence. What looked to 

be a sure try was tackled on the line and held up, much to Woodham’s 

frustration. 

Harlow were to push again and scored their last try of the game. With 

the conversion the score stood 12 – 52. Woodham pushed for the last 3 

minutes of the half and the pressure got to Harlow with them conceding 

several penalties. 

Woodham kicked deep into the Harlow 22 to secure the lineout, losing 

the ball to Harlow. With covering tackles, Harlow lacked discipline again 

and gave away another penalty for entering at the side. 

Their frustration boiling over they were then pinged back 10 for dissent 

and were facing Woodham 5m from their line. Quick thinking from 

scrum half Michael’s for a quick penalty saw the ball passed out to 

Gerard who stormed through for the final try of the match. The 

conversion good and the final score 19 – 52. 

A tough game from a well drilled Harlow side, the score line not 

showing how well the Woodham boys had performed, with only 1 try 

and conversion difference in the second half. The Woodham pack on 

fire, with great effort from Ethan and Stig. The Man of the Match 

proved to be a tough call, but fittingly went to a forward Gerrard. 

SWF U13 50 v 5 Campion U13 

SWFRFC U13’s travelled to Romford on Sunday for their next fixture of 

the Waterfall Cup competition. 

On what turned out to be a sunny warm morning, Woodham kicked off 

to the home team from the top of a sloping pitch. 

The first 5 minutes saw Woodham shake away the cobwebs before they 

started to gel and play like a team. Zachary opened the scoring for SWF 

after the ball was passed out and he made a strong run into the right 

corner to dot down. 

This seemed to calm the nerves and soon the boys were starting to find 

their rhythm. Mason was the next to cross the line after a few more 

minutes play and the die was cast for the rest of the game. On his debut, 

Archie took an off load from Adam and hugged the right touchline to 

go past 3 defenders to touch down in the corner. The smile on his face 

said it all. 

With the pack winning most of the scrums, this gave Woodham a good 

platform to keeping launching attacks from all over the park to keep 

going forward. Further tries from Adam and Oliver saw the visitors 25- 

0 up at half time. 

Zachary opened the scoring in the 2nd half with his 2nd of the game 

followed by Bradley before Zachary scored his 3rd of the game. With 

the game going Woodham’s way, the team was changed around a bit 

with some forwards and backs swapping positions to give them an 

experience of playing somewhere new. Campion made a good break 

down their left wing and just about managed to get past our ‘forward 

winger’ with Archie catching him at the 5m line but his momentum took 

him forward and he touched down in the corner. 

From the restart Woodham kept going forward and an off load from 

Max saw Ryan battle through the middle to score the visitors 9th try. 

Adam crossed the line for his 2nd try and the final score was 50-5 to 

Woodham. 

Take nothing away from Campion; they are a new side this year and 

they had some good moments which put the visitors under pressure at 

times and they never gave up. A few more seasons and this match 

would be a much closer affair. 

Good team work from the U13’s today, still areas to improve on and 

‘consistency’ and ‘belief’ are the words for the 

rest of the season.
