Meeting to help recruit
referees scheduled
The number of officials in all sports is
declining and it has become a struggle to
get new individuals to enter the vocation.
With games being canceled due to lack of
officials, and games being moved to dates
when officials are available, the schools are
taking notice.
Parkway West Athletic Director Brian
Kessler came up with an idea.
A committee has been formed to deal
with recruitment, retention and sportsmanship.
The committee is headed by Kessler,
Lafayette AD Todd Zell and Parkway West
Assistant AD Annie Wayland. There are
members of every conference in the metro
area on the committee.
The committee now is named St. Louis
S.C.O.R.E.S, which stands for St. Louis
Area Sportsmanship Committee and Official
Retainment and Enlistment in Sports.
The committee’s objectives include: promotion
of sportsmanship in the athletic
community by teaching and exemplifying
respect and integrity at all levels of competition
[players, coaches, officials]; recruitment
of new officials; retaining current
officials; and, along with MSHSAA, promote
the value of participation, sportsmanship,
team play and personal excellence to
develop citizens who make positive contributions
to their community and support the
democratic principles of the state and the
nation.
An officials recruitment night for all
sports takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
April 4 at Parkway West High.
