between Chesterfield and Maryland Heights.
BALLWIN
Old Ballwin Road construction
projects begin
Work began this week to replace curbs,
gutters, sidewalks and curb ramps along
Old Ballwin Road. It is anticipated the
work will last about three weeks. Residents
and visitors are encouraged to allow extra
time for travel, as traffic will be reduced to
one alternating lane, or plan to use a different
route entirely.
Missouri American Water also will begin
installing a new water main on Old Ballwin
Road between Parker Drive and Nancy
Place. This project is expected to be completed
by the end of May.
CHESTERFIELD
River Valley Drive closure
completed after much debate
The closure of River Valley Drive at the
city limits between Chesterfield and Maryland
Heights has been completed.
Residents in the area had asked for
the closure due to concerns about traffic
volume from anticipated development of
property in Maryland Heights.
An original design for the closure had
to be reconfigured when it was discovered
that land the homeowners association had
planned to give to Chesterfield for a culde-sac
at the closure could not be conveyed
to the city. The cul-de-sac and closure
then were redesigned with the use of other
adjoining property. Emergency vehicles
can unlock the gate when necessary.
hearing scheduled
A public hearing for the Capital Improvement
Program [CIP] for fiscal years 2019-
2023 is at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 9 in the
City Council chambers at the Government
Center, 300 N. New Ballas Road.
The CIP includes projects such as construction
of sidewalks, installation of park
amenities, street resurfacing and improvements
to the stormwater system. Funding
for projects comes from the city’s half-cent
capital improvement sales tax, grants and
transfers from the general fund.
The CIP process includes input from
residents, elected and appointed officials
and city staff; preparation of the draft CIP
by city staff; review of the CIP by the planning
& zoning commission and finance
committee; a public hearing; and final
adoption by the city council. The CIP is
updated each year.
TWIN OAKS
Twin Oaks branches out
with new town hall
From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on March 28, the
City of Twin Oaks will hold the grand opening
for its new town hall. The new facility
is located 1393 Big Bend Road, Suite F.
The opening will showcase the new facility,
which city staff already has moved into,
to the general public. The event is free for
the public to attend and refreshments will
also be available. Construction of the new
town hall ended in early 2018 after about
12 years of planning and about $1.7 million
in funds. The facility is about 5,500-
square feet in size, and will serve as the
location for the city’s Board of Alderman
meetings going forward. The hall is split
into two areas, with one housing the city’s
administrative offices and the other containing
a multipurpose community room
that also will also serve as the aldermanic
chamber. The multipurpose room also can
be divided into larger and smaller meeting
rooms, and the city is looking to open the
area as a potential meeting space for nonprofit
groups and local clubs.
Scholarships available
from Circle Of Concern
High school seniors from low-income
families in the Rockwood, Parkway and
Valley Park school districts have the
opportunity to earn money for higher
education through Circle Of Concern
Food Pantry’s annual scholarship program.
Applications can be downloaded
online at circleofconcern.org and must
be completed and received by 3 p.m. on
April 23.
Circle has awarded more than $1 million
in scholarships during the course of
its 50 years in service. It expects to award
approximately $90,000 this year through
its various scholarship programs. Candidates
applying for scholarships must
demonstrate significant financial need
and merit based on academic achievement
and/or character. Scholarships can
be used at professional trade schools,
community colleges or four-year institutions.
New to the program this year is Circle’s
partnership with myscholarshipcentral.org,
an online portal that helps students navigate
the scholarship process. The website
allows students to fill out a general application
that then suggests multiple scholarships,
therefore maximizing students’
opportunities to receive more private student
aid.
