We might be both the most educated and underemployed
generation in history, but as “millennials”
we are natural born opportunists. One thing is for
certain – retirement for us will look quite different
than it will for our parents. Our parents have had to
work their whole lives and save as much money as
possible with the hope that they will be able to stop
working at age 65+. That is when they can start taking
social security, as well as live off their 401Ks and
for the lucky few – a pension. That is many of our
parent‘s retirement plan. Most of us are not likely
going to work towards a magic day in the future
when we can golf every day and maintain our garden
“every day until you die”. To me that actually sounds
pretty boring – why would I want to “disengage” for
the rest of my life? Lower stress? Sure, I would definitely
take lower stress, but I would still like to stay
busy and have projects. I do not imagine ever just
“checking out”. How many rounds of golf can someone
play anyway?
The Digital Nomad
The research data suggests that while many jobs
in the market today did not exist 20 years ago, it is
expected that in around a decade’s time, 60% of the
jobs will be completely new compared to today and
many will not require a fixed place of work. Work is
becoming more and more nomadic in the sense that
almost anyone nowadays can work from a computer.
The relation between “work” and “nine-to-five”
is eroding. „Digital nomad“ is a term that is earning
more relevance and popularity. At its core, being
a digital nomad is about having the ability to work
using technology. These nomads tend to be entrepreneurs,
own their own business, freelance or work
as consultants. The term spans a range of industries;
programmers, coaches, translators, bloggers, and
designers just to name a few.
