sCharity Quiz for Aspire
On the 18th August 2018, I will be taking part in a truly gruelling event.
SWIMMING THE SOLENT
From Fort Gilkicker, at Gosport to Ryde Sands on the Isle of Wight. I’ll swim a
distance between 2.3 and 3 miles, depending on the wind and the tide. Not only
is it a long way to swim, but I’ll have to keep out of the way of sailing boats,
ferries and jellysh!
I am undertaking this almighty challenge in aid of Aspire, a charity dedicated to
*
supporting individuals who have suered life changing spinal injuries. I’ve set
myself a fundraising target of £1500.00 and you can make a donation by visiting
www.justgiving.com/fundraising/swimrobynswim
As part of my fund raising eorts I’m hosting a Quiz night on Saturday 12th
May at the Village Hall in South Woodham Ferrers. There is a bar available to
help power those brain cells and your welcome to bring your own nibbles. Not
only is it a chance to show o how clever you are but it’s an opportunity to win
some great prizes in the ra e.
Tickets are just £5 per person, so why not make up a team, as large or as small
as you fancy, and come along for a great night out, in aid of a good cause.
City Council seeks
Chelmsford’s
Champions
Chelmsford City Council is now accepting award
nominations for people who go the extra mile to look
after their local environment.
The Chelmsford Champions awards have been
developed to recognise and thank the extraordinary
individuals that make Chelmsford officially the Best
Place to Live in the East of England (Sunday
Times).
Open to anyone who lives in Chelmsford and the
surrounding borough, the scheme invites
nominations for those who have demonstrated
commitment to making a positive difference to their
neighbourhood. This could be anything from litter
picking and planting flowers to doing something
creative or leading others to get stuck into improving
their local area. Prizes will be presented to the
selected Champions at a special ceremony in
August.
The awards are part of Love Your Chelmsford, a
programme that celebrates the local environment
and provides opportunities for residents to get
involved, including river clean-ups, volunteering, fun
events and competitions.
Councillor Malcolm Sismey, Cabinet Member
responsible for Love Your Chelmsford, said, “We
know that there are wonderful people in every
community who go out of their way to make their
local area as attractive, welcoming and pleasant as
possible. These awards are a way of thanking those
residents. I look forward to reading the entries and
I encourage as many nominations as possible.”
The closing date for nominations is Saturday 30
June. To nominate a Community Champion, please
email the Love Your Chelmsford team at
lyc@chelmsford.gov.uk, call 01245 615800 or
The Light
There is a saying – “You can choose your friends, but we can`t choose our families”. This is true; we
hope that our family members are caring, loving and supportive, but know, that in this world, it can
go both ways.
Most can agree that nurturing parents who seek to teach, listen, encourage and provide good
examples to their children give them the best start. They then, engage with the wider world through
-#(#%%$).//&
school and work and make friends that, hopefully, will nurture further that growth into an adult.
The cycle then continues. Unfortunately, this isn`t always the case, and for a multitude of reasons the family can
break apart. We cannot always know how things may turn out with family or friends.
The church understands the value of family, a fellowship gathered around a” father figure” – God. The relationships
we seek in our lives we hope to be reliable, honest, attentive to our needs however we may feel whether in a good
or bad mood. This is the sign of a loving relationship that will last and will grow and learn from.
If we are fortunate we may have this in our family, friends or both. But what if we are feeling alienated, not loved
or cared for – whether we deserve it or not. God is faithful and forgiving. He listens and encourages us to talk to
him, with each other, and to share Him with everyone. Through Him we are Love, Joy and Peace – for that is what
He said, Jesus did, and we all can do.
!"#$%&'"($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
There is no need for anyone to feel that they are not part of a family. I knew a man in a prison where I worked,
where, through a number of repeat offences, he removed many
relationships from around himself – family, friends, home, job, selfesteem.
He said that it was just him left – this was not the case. God`s
reach is long, and he recovered and started again.
Millwood WI - The WI for inspiring women
Our April
meeting was
our Annual
G e n e r a l
Meeting and
Resolutions.
Jan Nash was
our WI advisor
and she
convened at
our meeting.
Jan is
president of
Billericay WI
and enjoys gardening, she described the job of treasurer as the root of
the plant, the job of secretary as the stem and the president as the
flower. Our president Yvonne Frost decided to stand down after seven
and a half years and Julia presented her with a beautiful pot plant as a
thank you from all of us. Yvonne thanked all the committee for all their
hard work over the last twelve months. We had a ballot and four people
were nominated to be president and three out of four declined. Anne
Turner accepted and will be our new president. Caroline has agreed to
go on committee and will take over from Anne as treasurer. The rest of
the committee have decided to stay on for another year and Susan
Martin has agreed to go on committee.
We then went on to our resolutions, and this year we only had one
resolution this year to vote on. Yvonne explained to our newer members
how important resolutions are and the history of them. One of the most
famous ones was 'The Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign. Any member can put
forward a resolution. 15,000 were put forward last year. A committee
looks through them and eventually we have a short list which comes out
in November. In January each WI selects the one they would most like to
go forward and in April we all vote on it and then it goes to National in
June and finally parliament. This years resolution is Mental Health
Matters. The importance of parity between mental health and physical
health illness and to lobby the government for better support for mental
health and to make it acceptable to talk about mental health issues
Yvonne went on to read the pros and cons. We then voted and we had
the same number of votes for and against the resolution and no one
abstained so it was a split vote.
Traidcraft had a stall with a good selection of fair trade items to buy.
Our Forth Coming Events
is on Friday 1st June in Maldon
MEDICAL TRAINING: The Mirror headline screams: "More than 1,000
junior doctors have job offers WITHDRAWN after IT blunder causing
“extreme anxiety.” Many were in the process of moving home and
switching kids’ schools after being offered permanent hospital posts
last month."
An article by Andrew Gregory, Political Editor, tells us that: "As many
as 1,500 junior doctors offered posts as registrars are feared to have
had their job offers withdrawn." The Royal College of Physicians
(RCP) discovered some candidates had been given the wrong
interview marks due to an error in transferring data from one
computer program to another." We're told: "The British Medical
Association said it was “appalled” to learn of the blunder, warning
it had caused “extreme anxiety” for trainees." So it's back to the
drawing board ... whilst all the poor docs can do is sit tight and wait.
This is not the first time that junior hospital doctors have been badly
treated, of course. You'll recall that Hunt clashed with the junior
doctors over his 'new contract, which caused some to leave and left
the rest dispirited and bitter.
And there have been similar blunders with the training program.
When my daughter, Laura, set out on the path which eventually lead
to consultant status, a lot of her friends were less fortunate. Sarah
Hall reported the cock up made by Liam Donaldson, the then chief
medical officer in The Guardian back in July 2007 - a blunder which
the BMA's then acting chairman, Sam Everington, condemned as
'the "scandal" of thousands of doctors contemplating leaving
medicine or going abroad.'
She added: "One in five juniors affected is feeling increasingly
suicidal and 94% have felt higher stress levels during the six months
covering the application and interview process, according to
research published in the British Medical Journal online. Hospitals
have been told to be on suicide alert.
Much of this fury is due to the mismatch between training posts and
applicants, and the uncertainty this is causing. Department of Health
(DH) figures reveal that doctors are chasing 18,391 training posts -
with 29,193 applying for 15,600 in England. A total of 2,320 posts
will be on offer in a second round of applications, but at least 12,000
eligible junior doctors will remain without posts and will instead
have to seek work abroad, leave medicine, or remain in staff-grade
jobs, which will not allow them to become consultants and are often
seen as career dead-ends."
Laura's colleagues were treated as a commodity - rather like a tins of
peas on a supermarket shelf - instead of being dealt with sensitively
- like human beings with needs, aspirations and feelings. The sort of
thing that happened all too often was that a married couple who
had bought a flat on Edinburgh would end up with one being given
a job in Aberdeen whilst the other ended up in Truro ... and the jobs
they got were not always in the specialty for which they'd applied.
My therapist told me that a great way to let go of your anger is to
write letters to people you hate and then burn them. I did that,
and I feel much better, but I'm wondering ... do I keep the letters?
It was ever thus. Junior hospital docs have always had a hard time. I
see Prof Harold Ellis is, in his dotage, currently advertising hearing
aids in the newspapers ... a bit of a comedown for one of Britain's
leading surgeons. I hope he's giving the money to a good cause.
Where was I? Ah yes ... the Prof's housemen (a term applied to
women docs as well as 'men' in these days) used to work a 'one in
one.' So, in theory at least, that meant you were on call continually
- day and night - for 6 months.
Prof Ellis wrote an excellent surgical textbook with Prof Roy Yorke
Calne, the well known surgeon and transplant pioneer, for whom I
worked in Cambridge. His house job was a 'one in two' which meant
that you got alternate nights off - unless he was doing a liver
transplant (which was of such interest that you voluntarily stayed up
all night to see the great man at work.) He wasn't averse to 'bread
and butter' surgery, mind you - after a night in theatres spent
transplanting a liver, I set to work in on his morning list the little
ante-room where the anaesthetists put people to sleep before
settling down to do The Times crossword. The first case was bilateral
in-growing toenails, which could safely be done in this 'ante-room'
and which, for reasons I don't recall, were being done under a
general anaesthetic. I looked up to see the Prof doing the other toe.
If I ever find out the name of the surgeon that screwed up my limb
transplant, I'll kill him ... with my bear hands.
The 'one in two' was OK on weekdays but weekends were a chore -
you'd start work on Friday morning and work right through to
Monday evening without a break (often taking on responsibilities
which were way above and beyond anything your training had
prepared you for.) You might snatch a few hours sleep - but a not
infrequent occurrence was that you'd get to bed at, say, 2.30am only
to get a call from a staff nurse at 3.30 asking you to come over to one
of the wards to write Mr Jones up for a sleeping tablet! Our theory
was that the nurses, who worked a shift system, couldn't envisage a
set-up whereby the docs were sleep deprived for long periods - so it
was OK to do that sort of thing. I love nurses - I married one, after
all, and they are the powerhouse of my practice - but I'm afraid that,
in the wee small hours, I did subscribe to this theory.
We were paid a pittance for working what was often a 100+ hr week
... but it was good training for my experience in General Practice in
the last decade or so during which successive PCTs tried their level
best to close the practice by squeezing us until the pips squeaked. As
ever, the patients were mere canon-fodder in the games that the
managers, those supposedly entrusted with their health and
wellbeing, like to play.
Doc to patient: "You have the body of a twenty-year-old, but you
should return it. You're stretching it completely out of shape."
The first encounter with the weird world of medical training begins
long before your days as a junior doctor. I made my choice because
I 'overheard' Mrs Dale‘s Diary which my Mum used to listen to 'on
the wireless' and it all sounded very civilised. Dr Dale always seemed
to be able to go home for a leisurely tea in the afternoon. The
scriptwriter had either never had any experience at all of General
Practice or it was VERY different in those days!
Adam Kay in his wonderful book 'This is Going to Hurt' talks about
the application process: "Because all medical schools are
oversubscribed ten-fold all candidates must be interviewed with only
those who perform best under a grilling being awarded a place. It’s
assumed all applicants are on course for straight A’s at A-level so
universities base their decisions on non-academic criteria. This, of
course, make sense: a doctor must be psychologically fit for the job
– able to make decisions under a terrifying amount of pressure, able
to break bad news to anguished relatives, able to deal with death on
a daily basis. They must have something that cannot be memorised
and graded: a great doctor must have a huge heart and a distended
aorta through which pumps a vast lake of compassion and human
kindness.
At least that’s what you'd think. In reality, medical schools don’t give
the shiniest shit about any of that. They don’t even check you are
OK with the sight of blood. Instead they fixate on extra-curricular
activities. Their ideal student is captain of two sports teams, the
county swimming champion, leader of the youth orchestra and
editor of the school newspaper. It’s basically a Miss Congeniality
contest without the sash. Look at the Wikipedia entry for any
famous doctor and you’ll see: “He proved himself an accomplished
rugby player in youth leagues. He excelled as a distance runner and
in his final year at school was vice captain of the athletics team.”
This particular description is of a certain Dr H Shipman, so perhaps
it’s not a rock solid system."
When I applied for a place at medical school, my first interview was
at St George's - the old hospital at Hyde Park Corner. I was asked to
wait in the PA's office - and she was a very attractive young lady with
a degree of mammary hyperplasia. I was eventually ushered through
to meet the Dean and his question was: "As a doctor it's very
important to be observant so, tell me, what did you notice in the
office whilst you were waiting to see me?" I went bright red and
started muttering incoherently. Needless to say, I was not offered a
place.
NEWS FROM ST. MARY’S CHURCH, WOODHAM FERRERS
It’s a busy time at St. Mary’s Church prompting me to let people
know the latest news and dates for your diary.
On June 2nd we are holding a Churchyard Tidy Up session from
10 – 12 noon. Everyone is welcome to come along with their
gardening tools, petrol mowers and strimmers or perhaps help
rub down and oil one of our benches. We will provide a warm
welcome and refreshments to all comers. There is another Tidy
Up day scheduled for September 29th also between 10 and 12
noon if you want to organise your diary well in advance.
St. Mary’s recently completed some more tree work in the
Churchyard. We have saved the logs which are seasoning nicely
and will be available in October at £70 a load
delivered. All proceeds go into the Friends of
St. Mary’s fund to support the upkeep of the
fabric.
Due to the beautiful display of bulbs and the
wet weather the grass is always a bit longer
throughout April and May and it seems to grow
while we are watching it. St. Mary’s benefits
from regular Community Payback team visits to
help with the maintenance. We schedule these
visits from month to month and if anyone
would be interested in joining us on these days
please get in touch so I can notify you when the
next date is. We continue to work hard to bring
the Churchyard back within the Diocesan
regulations. Gardens are not permitted, just
grass, bulbs and fresh flowers. Wreaths can be
placed on the anniversary of a loved ones
passing as well as at Christmas and Easter. By
enforcing these regulations the Churchyard is a
tidier and safer place to visit. There is further
guidance on the Diocesan regulations in the
Church Porch and I am always happy to discuss this further.
On July 7th we will be delighted to welcome the Essex Police
Choir to perform. The concert starts at 7.30 p.m. – 10 p.m.
During the interval homemade refreshments will be served
when our local accordion player Keith Taylor has agreed to
serenade us again. Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children
under 12 or members of Friends of St. Mary’s. For further details
go on the St. Mary’s website or call me on the number below.
Funds raised will go towards the Bell tower restoration project.
St. Mary’s was delighted to recently receive a grant of £500 from
Allchurches Trust towards the cost of our replacement lead
alarm. The lead alarm is necessary to be insurance compliant
and offers excellent protection. The latest model is a significant
upgrade on the old one which was at the end of its useful life.
St. Mary’s continues to open on a Tuesday morning from 10 – 12
noon while the cleaning team get busy. Once again we
welcome visitors and serve refreshments. The church will also be
open for the first Sunday afternoons in the months of June, July,
August and September followed by an Evensong service.
Go to www.stmaryschurchwoodhamferrers.org.uk for more
details.
To help raise additional funds St. Mary’s continues to collect
inkjet cartridges, old mobile phones, laser and toner cartridges.
There is a recycling box in the Church. We just received our first
payment of £28 from Recycle4Charity for inkjet cartridges. This
week I have posted our first batch of 21 phones to them. You
can find out more about this scheme on line. So if you can lay
your hands on any of these items we would love to hear from
you. If you can’t get to church we will be happy to collect them.
What a great Open Day Eyott Sailing Club had on May 5th thank you everyone for
making it such a fantastic day! The clubhouse and grounds looked great, the
and old welcoming our visitors and enjoying the day. Everywhere people were
smiling and having a great time sailing and enjoying the BBQ or ice-cream.
Hopefully they will be telling all their friends what a lovely day they had; and we
see some of them again soon. If you missed it, our next taster Day 26th May at
FOOTBALL FOR ADULTS
I organise casual football matches for adults on the 3G pitches at
the William de Ferrers Sports Centre. If you are like me and want
to play football but don’t want the commitment of playing for
a club then get in touch. The idea is just to enjoy a game and get
some exercise at the same time.
We play every Tuesday night in all-weather between 9pm-10pm
and hire half of the full size pitch closest to the centre itself. The
cost is £5 on the night.
The sports centre run a strict cancellation policy which means I
need to give them 15 days’ notice if we do not have enough
players and want to cancel, otherwise I still have to pay. For that
reason I need to ask players to confirm availability in advance
and ask that you avoid dropping out.
SWFU FC U15 LIONS 2 – 1 WRITTLE MINORS U15 GREENS.
BLACKWATER AND DENGIE U15 DIVISION THREE ‘LEAGUE CUP FINAL’.
‘League Cup Final’ games are always special occasions and ‘SWFU
FC U15 Lions’ know this better than anyone!
This was the third consecutive season the Lions had overcome
tough competition on their journey to the ‘League Cup Final’.
But this time – it was different! The Lions had already been
crowned ‘undefeated League Champions’ and were coming into
the match as favourites. Writtle had also enjoyed a successful
season. Whatever the result, this was going to be a display of
grassroots football at it’s finest!
Arriving relaxed and confident at ‘Burnham Ramblers FC’ in their
executive coach – each Lion was professionally dressed in white
shirt, black trousers and red tie. The boys then made their way
to the changing rooms for their usual team banter and lastminute
instructions from their coaches Andy, Wayne and Darren.
The Lions’ loyal army of family and supporters were already in
the stands, anticipating what the next eighty minutes of action
would bring.
Both teams made their way to the pitch and wished each other
well, with welcome encouragement ringing from the stands.
Writtle gained the upper hand in the first half, by netting the
first goal. The Lions showed great character in the second by
knuckling down and showing the Greens why they were League
Champions.
Joe S fired home the equaliser. Sam B was brought down and
taken to hospital with a suspected break (fortunately after an X-
Ray, this wasn’t the case). The Lions supporter’s nerves were
literally being ripped to shreds with the drama unfolding on the
pitch. Tom ‘H’ gave them a sigh of relief when he put the Lions
ahead with a cracking shot. After some tense final minutes, the
referee’s whistle brought the end to a superb Cup Final.
Many congratulations to both teams, for giving their all in an
outstanding display of the beautiful game. Well done lads!
SWFU U15 Lions are: Sam B, Josh B, Will C, Callum C, James D,
Alex G, Tom ‘H’, Dan L, Morgan L, Edward M (Capt), Martin N,
James O, Sam P, Oliver R, Dan S, Joe S, Michael T and Dan W.
HARD-WORKING WANDERERS WARRANT A VALIANT DRAW
After spending most of the winter kicking their heels waiting for a game,
now that summer has arrived South Woodham Ferrers United under 13
Wanderers were facing their fourth match in eight days. The contrast in
temperature from the previous week was remarkable for the Saturday
fixture against Basildon Town Pumas, who were looking to climb to
second spot in division A. The game opened with Tom F putting in a
battling performance down the wing to dodge a barrage of tackles from
ten-man Pumas. Alfie’s composed tackle and through ball gave Tom F
another chance before a slick pass which Luke converted to put
Wanderers ahead. Things were looking positive until Pumas’ eleventh
man arrived on the scene: akin to Rashford’s taller, faster brother he
weaved through a sea of red shirts to win a penalty which was converted
to pull the scores even. Pumas executed an impressive passing sequence
which drew an outstanding save before forging ahead on a counterattack
after some promising Wanderers’ play. Mack put in a thoughtful
ball, but Harry could not get his shot away with sufficient power to beat
the lively keeper. Mack charged forwards again but was thwarted by the
well-organised defence. Tom F and Harry combined effectively to surge
forwards, with Harry’s powerful shot drawing a fingertip save. Under
pressure, Daniel’s marvellous clearance was perfectly placed for Tom F to
convert past the onrushing keeper to pull the scores level.
The intensity of tackles increased after the break: a resulting Pumas’ free
kick drew a grasping save, then the late-coming midfield powered
forwards and bravely coming out, Wanderers’ keeper saved the ball with
his feet but was injured in the process. As has been familiar in recent
matches, Charlie R confidently donned the purple shirt and gloves and his
initial rocket of a goal kick found Jacob, whose polished pass Harry just
couldn’t convert. Tom H was poleaxed but the ref played on, with the
sensible Pumas’ defender shouting for the whistle, then with only eleven
players left standing, unusually, rock-solid Will was taken down, followed
by wedding-bound Charlie W. Wanderers of old might have been
intimidated by the physicality of the opposition, but the present bunch
are grittier and more determined: Will’s free kick tested the keeper while
Matthew demonstrated admirable defensive nerve throughout the half.
Mack pressed forwards again with a sensational run and pass which the
defender hoofed away from Harry, Tom F’s shot was saved while Will’s
skimmed the bar. Pumas pressed on: Daniel, Luke and Mack all made
important clearances to spur Wanderers on to attack: Alfie made a great
run but Mack’s resulting shot sailed over the bar, Will’s free kick just
curled over the bar, followed by his free kick saved, as was Mack’s
whipping cross. Neither team was willing to concede the match and the
resulting two-all draw lifted the delighted Wanderers to the dizzy
heights of sixth in the league and away from the drop zone. Phew!
Under 8's At Saracen's Festival 5th May
25
A 33 strong squad of players, parents and siblings turned
up at Allianz Park for a Festival before the Saracens vs
Gloucester game.
The weather was terrific, the ground was perfect, and the
rugby was fast and furious.
The Squad was Alfie, Brad, Hayden, Katie, Keith, Logan,
Luca, Noah, Ollie, Reighly, and Thea. 6-a-side. 12 minute
games.
We played teams from Gloucester, Folkestone, Hertford,
and Chelmsford. The Team played well in each game, and
at times the passing and interplay brought even bigger
cheers from the supporters on the side. Great to play in,
great to watch. Every player did well on the day.
At the end of the tournament the players had the pleasure
of lining up in front of their supporters and ceremoniously
removing and throwing their tag belts away. It's contact
from now on! The readiness for contact is unbelievable.
The squad got time with some Saracen's academy players.
Everyone got the opportunity to get photo's and
autographs from some of the best players in the world.
Owen Farrell, Mako and Billy Vunipola, Essex's own
Jackson Wray to name but a few.
There's worse ways to spend a sunny Saturday. If you want
to play rugby and experience some of this. Contact Gerry
