Below and opposite: Sunset Center,<br />

<strong>Amarillo</strong>’s first indoor mall, has been<br />

converted into an artist community.<br />

The Galleries at Sunset, with over fifty<br />

studio-galleries, is also home to the<br />

Panhandle Art Center and the <strong>Amarillo</strong><br />

Art Institute.<br />

Indoor activities include enjoying the wide<br />

array of visual arts venues the city has to<br />

offer. <strong>Amarillo</strong> College is home to the<br />

<strong>Amarillo</strong> Museum of Art, founded in 1967<br />

by community members for the purpose of<br />

showcasing local art as well as loaned<br />

exhibits. Other venues for art lovers in<br />

<strong>Amarillo</strong> are the Panhandle Art Center,<br />

<strong>Amarillo</strong> Fine Arts Association, and <strong>Amarillo</strong><br />

Art Institute. The Galleries at Sunset Center,<br />

home to a prolific and emerging local arts<br />

scene, opens over fifty galleries to the public<br />

for “First Friday Art Walk” each month.<br />

Private galleries include the IC Gallery, the<br />

Rayburn Gallery, and the Carey-McDuff<br />

Contemporary Art Gallery. Downtown <strong>Amarillo</strong><br />

is home to the Process Art House, a gallery<br />

where emerging contemporary art is featured.<br />

Panhandle Plains Historic Museum in<br />

Canyon offers loaned exhibits and is home<br />

to the permanent collections of Harold<br />

Bugbee, Frank Reaugh, and other Texas and<br />

Southwestern artists, as well as Eastern<br />

American and European art. Other exhibits<br />

appear from time to time in <strong>Amarillo</strong>’s<br />

banks, hotels, and restaurants. Art shows can<br />

also be found in shops and other venues<br />

like Blue Sage Pottery and Art Gallery, The<br />

Nat Ballroom, and The 806, all within the<br />

U.S. Route 66-Sixth Street Historic District.<br />
