Stanley Marsh 3 is an <strong>Amarillo</strong> rancher,<br />

philanthropist, and patron of unique artistic<br />

projects including the Ozymandias, the<br />

Dynamite Museum, and Cadillac Ranch.<br />

Other notable <strong>Amarillo</strong> residents past<br />

and present are poker player T. A. “<strong>Amarillo</strong><br />

Slim” Preston, millionaire Stanley Marsh 3,<br />

oilman T. Boone Pickens, Jr., the late United<br />

States Ambassador to Sweden Teel Bivins,<br />

and former FDIC Chairman Don Powell.<br />

<strong>Amarillo</strong>’s heroes include Thomas E. Creek,<br />

U.S. Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipient,<br />

and astronauts Paul Lockhart and Rick D.<br />

Husband. Astronaut Rick D. Husband, who<br />

grew up in <strong>Amarillo</strong>, was commander of<br />

the space shuttle Columbia and died during<br />

its catastrophic disintegration upon re-entry<br />

in 2003. His life and service to the nation<br />

is commemorated by the naming of the<br />

city’s airport as the Rick Husband <strong>Amarillo</strong><br />

International Airport where a statue has been<br />

erected in his honor.<br />
